Marvin Elwin Crawford

Marvin Elwin Crawford, 71 of Sparta, passed away Aug. 27, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Crawford was born April 17, 1942, in Detroit, Mich. His parents were Marvin Gerald Crawford and Alberta Crawford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Cynthia Crawford.
Survivors include his sons, Timothy Brian Crawford, of Doyle, Gerald Stevens Crawford, of Sparta; two grandchildren, Katelyn Crawford-Sanders, Aydin Michael Crawford; one brother, James Crawford, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one sister, Debbie Mason, of New Mexico.
No services are being planned at this time.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Robert Glenn Hodges

Robert Glenn Hodges, 61, of McMinnvile, passed away Aug. 27, 2013, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Mr. Hodges was born Aug. 4, 1952, in Sparta, to Bessie Cruise Hodges and Raymond Hodges.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Aug. 30, 2013, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. Visitation will be 8 a.m-2 p.m., Aug. 30, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


James Russell Stamps

James Russell Stamps, 82 of Doyle, passed away Aug. 28, 2013, at the Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Stamps was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Sparta to James Willard Stamps and Callie Holman Stamps.
He was retired from the both the U.S. Navy and as a print shop manager. He was also a former White County school bus driver, member of Bear Cove Baptist Church, and he took great pride in his yard work.
Mr. Stamps was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite Christine Speck Stamps; granddaughter, Teri Rhea; sisters, Bula Frasier, Eula Young; and brother, Willard Stamps.

Dorothy Elise Sparkman Davis, 83, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 28, 2013, at her residence in Sparta.
Mrs. Davis was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Spencer, to Ivey Rennels Sparkman and Bessie Johnson Sparkman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy Grant Davis; and brother Roy Sparkman.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, SR-462 new construction from U.S. 70 (SR-1) to U.S. 70N (SR-1), including grading, drainage and paving: Work continues on this project. Orris ‘Rocky” Spivey

Orris ‘Rocky” Spivey, 77, of Shelbyville, passed away Aug. 29, 2013.
Mr. Spivey was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Sparta, Tennessee, to John Hillard and Lovey Sliger Spivey.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired supervisor from Jostens Inc. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann Spivey, in 2012, and a brother, Charles Spivey.

Sheriff department seeks help locating burglary suspects

Two men suspected of committing a burglary in the Buck Loop area of White County are sought by the White County Sheriff Department and are believed to be armed and dangerous.
According to Public Information Officer Detective Chris Isom, on the evening of Aug. 27, 2013, officers received a report of a burglary, and Deputy Ryan Melanson received warrants for Timothy Richard Lewis and James Thompson Walden, the two men suspected of the burglary.
Isom said the department had already been attempting to apprehend Lewis for a violation of probation warrant issued out of Cumberland County.

Young man fatally injured in auto accident remembered

Joey David Jones II

SPC Joey David Jones II, 20, had a bright future ahead of him in the Army National Guard.
Jones, known as Boomer to his friends, enlisted in September 2011 and began basic training after graduating from White County High School in 2012.
Jones was involved in the high school’s ROTC program and, when the time came, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the National Guard.
On July 27, 2013, Jones’ life was cut short when he passed away from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
His kind and selfless spirit is what people remember most about him.

School receives $1,500 literacy grant

Northfield Elementary School has recently been awarded a $1,500 grant by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support youth literacy programs in the school.
According to Principal Kurt Dronebarger, Title I teacher Teresa Holman applied for the grant to aid students who are in need of reading intervention.
The funds will be used to purchase materials for reading intervention and computers for the children to take benchmark tests, to assess not only which children need help, but also to assign a remediation program based on the areas that need improvement.
Students who do need help take part in reading labs to focus on their specific needs.

 Fall Creek Falls State Park will host its 35th Annual Mountaineer Folk Festival Sept. 6-8, offering a weekend of traditional music, country cooking, pioneer demonstrations and more than 100 craft booths.
“The Mountaineer Folk Festival highlights and celebrates the heritage of the Cumberland Plateau with great music, food and fun for the whole family,” Park Manager Jim Hall said. “This year’s event promises to be the biggest and best to date with exciting opportunities for all ages. A hard hit. Jake Shockey makes a hard hit on a Stone Memorial runner during Monday’s junior varsity game, which the Warriors won 22-13.

The junior varsity/Freshman Warrior football team opened their season Monday at Stone Memorial and came away with the 22-13 victory.
For almost the entire first two quarters, the defenses controlled the game. The teams exchanged punts early and then each turned the ball over on downs. WCHS did force a fumble and Malik Murray recovered for the Warriors.

WCHS hosts Livingston Academy for home opener

Will the Warriors go to 2-0? The Warrior football team has the chance to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 1989 when Livingston Academy visits Warrior Stadium Friday night. To get to that point, the Warriors will have to snap a six-game losing skid to the Wildcats. Kick off for the game is slated for 7 p.m.

The White County High School football team, who is coming off their largest margin of victory in almost 50 years, will be trying to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 1989 when they welcome Livingston Academy to Dee Harris Field Friday night for the home opener.

Wild hogs trample White County farms

Wild hogs trampled many acres of this Lost Creek farm, destroying thousands of dollars in crops that cannot be recouped. Residents of the area feel they are out of options and are forced to tolerate the destruction of the hogs on their property.

Wild hogs roaming the fields and woodlands of White County is not a new problem, but it has become such a nuisance to some residents, that they are reporting crop losses of $500 per day because of the hogs trampling their harvest.
