Helping a friend and co-worker

White County school bus drivers volunteered their time, on Sept. 27, to help one of their fellow bus drivers, Shawn Morgan, who is battling cancer. Drivers pitched in to cook hamburgers and prepare take-out meals to help raise funds to assist Morgan with her medical expenses. Taste of Home Cooking School prizes announced

What now? That simple question of “What now?” appears to be what young Jonathan Cranford is asking his buddy Michelle Roberts, culinary specialist with Taste of Home Cooking School. Roberts not only teaches the audience how to prepare simple and delicious dishes, but she also adds a bit of humor to her presentation. Jonathan has become one of her regular sidekicks during the Sparta event. Jonathan is the son of David and Jennifer Cranford, of Sparta, and grandson of Alan and Joyce Tatum, also of Sparta.

The grand prize for the upcoming Taste of Home cooking school event has just been announced.

Homecoming royalty 2013. Lacee Hithcock was crowned the 2013 WCHS homecoming queen during halftime of Friday’s football game. She was escorted by her stepfather, Mike O’Neal. See Page 6B for pictures of the rest of the homecoming court.

Richard A. Zinser

Richard A. Zinser, 84, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 25, 2013, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Zinser served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1968 (with tours of duty in the Mediterranean and Antarctica) and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a current member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He possessed a great love of God and his country.
He was a brother of the Sparta, Tenn., Masonic Lodge, No. 99 and past brother of the Union Masonic Lodge, No. 259, New Brighton, Penn., as well as the Mt. Vernon Lodge, No. 4, in North Kingstown, R.I. He was a Past Worthy Patron … Read More


James Ronald Tungate

James Ronald Tungate, 47, passed away at his parents’ home, in Sparta, on Sept. 22, 2013, after losing his battle with cancer.
Mr. Tungate was born Aug. 16, 1966.
He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Barbara Tungate; wife, Sylvia Tungate; grandmother, Marie LaFever; brothers, Scott and Kris; sisters, Cindy, Pam and Sara; brothers-in-law, Todd and Anthony; sisters-in-law, Melonie and Shae; four nephews; three nieces; stepchildren, Richard, Daniel and Hannah and their spouses, Casey and John; and several extended family members.
A small service was held 11 a.m., Sept. 24, 2013, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.


Cookeville spoils senior night for volleyball team

Volleyball seniors. The five seniors on the WCHS volleyball team were honored prior to their final home match of the season against Cookeville on Thursday. Those five seniors are (l to r): Kelsey Roberts, Brooke McCulley, Haily Lamb, Rachel Kinser and Sydney Holeman.

The Warriorette volleyball team had a tough match Thursday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium for senior night.
Five WCHS seniors played their final home volleyball match of the season against their archrivals, the Cookeville Lady Cavaliers (19-9, 8-2). Van Buren School resource officer Rick Perez

When Rick Perez moved to Spencer two years ago, he anticipated a quiet retirement away from the hurricanes and fast-paced Florida lifestyle. Retirement just wasn’t in the cards for Perez, however, as he has recently become the new school resource officer for Van Buren County schools.
Before taking his new position on Sept. 2, Perez wasn’t content to be completely retired. He volunteered more than a year as a court officer and doing administrative work for the Sheriff Department. Even after 30 years of service in law enforcement, he just wasn’t ready to completely walk away from serving his community.

State bound. Cameron Bruce and Shelby Johnson, pictured above with WCHS golf coach, Eric Mitchell, earned berths in the Class AAA state golf tournament with their play in the Region 3AAA tournament at Riverwatch on Thursday.

The White County High School golf team kept its state tournament streak alive last week.
Shelby Johnson and Cameron Bruce both earned berths in the Class AAA State Tournament making it four consecutive years that WCHS will have a representative in the big show. Soccer team adds another win to slate

The Warriorette soccer team improved to 5-6 on the season with their second 4-1 win during the week.

Warriors shut out Chattanooga Christian on homecoming

The Warrior football team enters Warrior Stadium for the homecoming. The WCHS marching band drumline escorted the team onto the field.

The White County High School Warrior football team celebrated homecoming in high fashion with a 37-0 win over Chattanooga Christian on Friday at Dee Harris Field.
The win improved the Warriors to 5-1 on the season.
WCHS scored all 37 points in the first half prompting a running clock for the entire second half.  The Warriors scored on the ground, through the air and defensively.
Blake Lynn was the leadere on offense with six carries for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Parrish arrested in Louisiana for allegedly kidnapping female juvenile

White County resident Charles Parrish was arrested in Marksville, La., on Sept. 26, 2013, after allegedly kidnapping a White County female who is under 18 years of age, on Sept. 23.
According to Detective Steve Page who has led the investigation on the case, last July, a woman came to White County Sheriff Department and made a statement to officers that she had found love notes in her teenage daughter’s school back pack between her daughter and a school bus driver, 42-year-old Parrish.
The mother reportedly told officers her daughter had babysat at Parrish’s residence, and her daughter admitted that they had sexual intercourse on … Read More


Askins, Foster and Webb charged with fraudulent conduct related to UCDD

Wendy Askins, 53, of Cookeville, Tenn., Larry Gene Webb, 64, of Smithville, Tenn. and Billy Michael Foster, 66, of Smithville, Tenn., were indicted yesterday by a federal grand jury and charged with various federal offenses related to theft and fraud from the Upper Cumberland Development District (UCCD), announced David Rivera, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. UCCD is a quasi-governmental economic development resource for the fourteen counties in the Upper Cumberland Region that was established by the Tennessee General Assembly and was funded in part by state and federal grants.

Shelby Johnson and Cameron Bruce, pictured above with WCHS golf coach, Eric Mitchell, both played their way into a berth in the Class AAA state golf tournament.

For the fourth consecutive year, White County High School will have a representative at the Class AAA state golf tournament.
In fact, for the second year in a row, there will be two WCHS golfers at the event.
Shelby Johnson will make her second straight trip to the state.  Johnson shot a 79 Thursday at Riverwatch in the Region 3AAA tournament to earn one of the individual spots.  Johnson, a junior, was the second lowest finisher in the girls’ field behind … Read More
