Izetta Jewell Adkins Thompson, 86, of the Cherry Creek Community of White County, passed away Nov. 29, 2013, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


David Earl Bohannon

David Earl Bohannon, 96, of Cookeville, passed away Nov. 23, 2013, at Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation Center in Monterey.
Mr. Bohannon was born May 7, 1917, in the Dry Valley community, of Putnam County, toDavid Officer and Cecil Elizabeth Bartlett Bohannon.
He retired from Goodyear in Akron, Ohio. After moving back to Cookeville, he retired a second time as supervisor in the Department of Inspection and Tool Engineering at McCord’s.
He was a 65-year member of Adoniram-Joppa Lodge #517 F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge in Akron. Mr. Bohannon was of the Baptist faith.

Frank Ennis England Sr., 91, of Sparta, Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. England was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Sparta, a son of Herman and Winnie Davis Askew England.
Mr. England served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands.
He was a photographer in Sparta for more than 40 years. He raised Tennessee Walking Horses and black and tan coonhounds for many years. He was a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association.
In addition to his parents, Mr, England was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Gaines England and Leslie England.

Louis Gentry, 74, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Gentry was born Oct. 13, 1939, in White County, to Clyde and Sarah Mabe Gentry.
He was a retired janitor from the White County School system.
Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lester Gentry; grandsons, Matthew and Silas White; and son-in-law Tracy O’Conner.
Survivors include his wife, Betty West Gentry, of Sparta; two daughters, Tammy O’Conner, of Sparta, Maggie (Rootie) White, of Cookeville; and six grandchildren.

Pat C. Willis

Pat C. Willis, 88, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 23, 2013, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Ms. Willis was born May 10, 1925, in Parker, Ind. She was a retired waitress.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earbie Ledford.
Survivors include her two stepdaughters, Margie D. Bumbalough, Opal Heady; stepson, James Ledford; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held graveside at 3:30 p.m., Dec. 2, 2013, at Highland Cemetery. John Murphy will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Vision of Hope provides help in time of need

Cars flooded the parking lot at Vision of Hope on Thursday morning, many people coming as early as 6:30 a.m. to wait for the doors to open 8 a.m. From 8 a.m. until noon, Vision of Hope fed 239 people in that morning alone.

Fire response leads to meth lab discovery

A White County Sheriff Department sergeant on patrol on the evening of Nov. 15 saw a large fire burning at a residence that has led to a Sparta resident facing her second round of methamphetamine charges this year.
According to a report by Sgt. Daniel Trivette, he noticed the fire behind the residence located on Flatt Street at approximately 9:27 p.m. and notified dispatch. He then went to the residence to see if the home was actually on fire and to see if there were any burn permits on file for the address.

Alan and Joyce Tatum are celebrating 20 years of business at Payless Family Pharmacy, the only locally owned pharmacy in Sparta.
The Tatums are excited to celebrate two decades of business with the community. There will be an open house 1-4 p.m., Dec. 6, 2013. James Endsley Cummings, 88, of the Cummingsville Community, in Van Buren County, departed this life on Nov. 23, 2013, at NHC Healthcare in Sparta after a brief illness, although he enjoyed living at home until two weeks prior to his illness.
Mr. Cummings was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, to Emery and Bertha Wallace Cummings, of Van Buren and White counties.
He was the youngest and only surviving sibling of Julius M. Cummings (Lois, currently of Atlanta, Ga.), Nashville, Floena Cummings Anderson, Sparta, and John O. Cummings, Bellingham, Wash.

Jamie Dewayne Spivey, 43, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 24, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Spivey was born July 8, 1970, in Sparta, a son of Wanda Winnett Spivey and Charles Spivey.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristina Spivey; grandparents, Ted and Lona Winnett and John and Lovie Spivey.

Funeral services for Jeanna Renee Beaty Willmann, 35, of Sparta, were 10 a.m., Nov. 25, 2013, at Presley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Benton Flatt officiating. Burial followed in Shipley Cemetery.
Mrs. Willmann passed away Nov. 21, 2013, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, in Sparta.
She was born March 14, 1978, in Putnam County, to Gary and Wilma Jean Beaty.
Mrs. Willmann was a CNA for 10 years. She liked to crotchet and loved music and was a loving mother.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Devon Lee Willmann, and her grandparents, Mayford and Christine Beaty and Mr. and Mrs. James Wesley Burgess.

George “Little George” Mancefield Johnson Jr., 48, of Walling, passed away recently at his residence.
George was born Sept. 29, 1965, in Smithville, a son of George Mancefield Johnson Sr. and the late Nellie Wood.
He was employed as a prison guard, in Pikeville, and he was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church.

Cullom to serve 23-year sentence on meth charges

Another Sparta resident, Lamar Mandell Cullom, has received a lengthy sentence for drug charges stemming from the March 5 drug roundup Operation Hawk Bill, in which 23 individuals who had been indicted by the Grand Jury were arrested.
According to Detective Joey Williams of the White County Sheriff Department, Cullom, had been charged with two counts of the sale of methamphetamine along with additional charges for violation of the drug-free school zone law, an added felony charge for selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school.

Families report stolen vases at Highland Cemetery

Although Highland Cemetery sits in the middle of a highly-populated area, acts of vandalism are still plaguing the otherwise peaceful resting place.

Families visiting their beloved deceased relatives at Highland Cemetery were recently upset to find that flower vases on their graves had been stolen.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, on Nov. 7 a resident reported that during a recent visit to her husband’s grave, she noticed that his vase, along with several other vases, were missing.
An officer investigating the report found that 12 graves appeared to have missing metal vases.

Still kicking high after nine decades

Doris Gamble has lead a vivacious life, to say the least. Sorting through the newspaper clippings and pictures she’s saved, it’s easy to see her vibrant spirit highlighted by her many accomplishments.
“I haven’t been still long,” Gamble said.
Gamble is by definition a triple threat, being talented in acting, singing, and dancing.
Gamble was very active in theatre, performing for the Cookeville Drama Center and with other acting groups. She has played roles in The Miracle Worker, Guys and Dolls, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and French Toast, to name a few.
