Ezra Dow Bray

Ezra Dow Bray, 85, of Sparta, formerly of Illinois, passed Dec. 27, 2013, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Bray was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Sparta, a son of Dow and Manda Lafever Bray.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and worked as a machinist.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bray was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Ruth Swanson Bray; son, Charles Ezra Bray; two brothers, Avery Bray, Amos Bray; two sisters, Bernise Bray, Vernie Allen; granddaughter, Alicia Dawn Ammon; and grandson, Nathaniel James Huie.

Bobby Austin White

Bobby Austin White, 76, of the River Bend Estates, passed away Dec. 30, 2013, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. White was born April 11, 1937, in Brownsville, the son of Samuel White and Eddie Mae White.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Thomas “Jimmy” White; and sister, Doris Hand.
Mr. White retired from CF Freightways where he drove a truck for 37 years, in Memphis. He was an active member of and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shriners, in Memphis.

Tennessee General Assembly passes 15 new laws effective January 1

Tennesseans will now have several new laws to follow effective the first day of 2014.
•Senate Bill 0882: Public Health – As enacted, requires schools and other organizations conducting youth athletic programs to adopt concussion policies. – Amends TCA Title 49 and Title 68, Chapter 55.
This bill requires the governing authority of each school with regard to school youth athletic activity to:
(1) Adopt guidelines and other pertinent information and forms as approved by the department of health to inform and educate coaches, school administrators, youth athletes and their parents or guardians of the nature, risk and symptoms of concussion and head injury, including continuing to play … CONTINUED


45-year-old Sparta man killed in holiday crash at Highway 111 split

Bud Vines, 45, died in this single-vehicle crash some time between Christmas Eve and Christnas morning.

A Sparta man on his way to visit relatives for Christmas was found deceased at the Highway 111 and Highway 70 split early Christmas morning by Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers who say he had crashed sometime the evening before.
According to Sgt. Jimmy Jones, Bud Vines, 45, of Sparta, was traveling in a 1996 Dodge Dakota truck from the Chattanooga area on Highway 111 some time on Dec. 24, 2013.

Man missing from Eastland Cemetery Road since Christmas

White County Sheriff deputies and the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad responded to Eastland Cemetery Road early in the morning hours of Christmas Day in an attempt to locate an 18-year-old man that was reported missing.
According to Public Information Officer Detective Chris Isom, on the evening before, Braxton Insco was at the home of a relative when a domestic dispute may have occurred, after which Insco left on foot.
Officers do not know which direction Insco traveled, and attempts to ping his cell phone have been unsuccessful. Isom reports that Insco may be confused or disoriented.

Joshua Tyler Davis, 25, of the Johnson Chapel community, passed away Dec. 28, 2013, at Highland Medical Center, in Sparta.
He attended the Johnson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his brother, Scott Lee Davis; uncle, Bobby Rice; and paternal grandparents, Leonna and Norman Davis.
Survivors include his parents, Jimmy “Hammer” and Connie Davis; maternal grandparents, Bob and Ruth Rice; four uncles, Jack and Mary Davis, Kenneth and Shawn Rice, Terry Rice, Les and Regina Davis, all of Sparta; one aunt, Tootsie Taylor, of Sparta; and two nieces, Kylee Davis and Kyra Agee, both of Smithville.

Donna Denise Narramore, 49, of Spencer, passed from this life on Dec. 29, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Narramore was born Dec. 28, 2013, in Tampa, Fla., the daughter of late Willie Morine Reeves and James M. Yates.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ruth Wallace, Brenda Oakwood; a brother, Milton Lynn Yates; and two grandchildren, David and Kayleigh Hastings.

Nora Mae Pinegar, 94, of Walling, passed away Dec. 27, 2013, at her residence.
Ms. Pinegar was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Monroe County, Ky., to George Hale and Mary Cunningham Howard.
She was a factory worker.

THP plans “No Refusal” campaign for New Year’s observances

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Mon., Dec. 30 and concluding at 11:59 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 1, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting “No Refusal” enforcements across the state in an effort to combat impaired driving, and ultimately fatal traffic crashes.
One county in each of the eight THP districts across the state has been chosen to host a No Refusal checkpoint. In the Cookeville District, Putnam County has been chosen.
During these checkpoints, law enforcement officials will be able to seek search warrants for blood samples in cases involving suspected impaired drivers under the No Refusal legislation.

Jeff and Peggy Harmann spent much of their time on the road before they retired. They walked along the Great Wall of China, saw the ruins of Rome, visited Stratford-upon-Avon, and went to Italy, but realized they had never been to Rock Island.
Jeff and Peggy received a wake-up call when they were diagnosed with illnesses that they realized could possibly keep them from accomplishing what they had hoped to do in life. Thus, they resolved to do what good they could while they could.

Riverdale defeats Warriors in Shootout title game

Sonic Shootout runner-up. The Warriors finished second in the 6th annual Sonic Shootout losing in the finals to Riverdale 75-67 on Saturday.

Two out of the three losses the Warrior basketball team have suffered this season have come against teams they have already defeated.
Such was the case Saturday night at Roy Sewell Gymnasium when the Warriors of White County High School squared off against the Riverdale Warriors in the championship game of the Sonic Shootout.
The WCHS Warriors have appeared in five of the six title games of the event, but still only have won the tournament once.
