Tennessee State Trooper placed on leave pending investigation

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security officials have placed Sergeant Daniel Threet of the state’s Highway Patrol on discretionary leave with pay effective February 25, pending a criminal investigation by the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The department’s Inspectional Services Bureau is also conducting an internal investigation into possible violations of Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) policies and procedures. All departmental equipment including weapons, badges and commission card were secured pending the investigation.
Threet, 45, is assigned to the THP Cookeville District. He worked with the Public Service Commission (1993-96) and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE), before his promotion to CVE sergeant during the merge with THP … Read More

Mark Raymond Howard, 98 of Sparta, passed Feb. 21, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Howard was born Nov. 10, 1915, in White County, to Milus and Katie Dement Carter Howard.
He always lived in the same area of White County. He was a member of Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church and active member of Sunday School and church and served as a deacon in his younger years. He enjoyed farming, woodworking and visiting family and friends. He was blessed with a long and successful life, and he will be greatly missed.

Benjamen E. “Benny” Howard, 63, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 23, 2014, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Howard was born Aug. 18, 1950, in Putnam County, to Woodrow Wilson and Elizabeth Louine Tindell Howard.
He was a former ACME Boot employee. He was a 1970 graduate of Tennessee State School for Deaf.

Woman missing since Feb. 16

White County Sheriff Department is advising the community to be on the lookout for a woman who has been missing since Feb. 16, 2014.
According to Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, Kelly Sue Reightler has not been seen or heard from since she left her residence in the early morning hours of Feb. 16.
Reightler resides on North Star Road, in the Bon Air Mountain community. Authorities say Reightler’s family is concerned about her, especially since she left home without her needed medications.

She was a former employee of Wilson Manufacturing and a longtime member of Smith Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

$8.25 minimum wage may be imposed in specific cases

Tennessee legislators are reviewing the possibility of passing a new law that would set the minimum wage at $8.25 for certain employers who do not offer health benefits to employees and employees’ dependents.
Subject to certain exemptions, the bill, if passed, would require each employer who employs 20 or more employees to pay a wage to each employee of not less than $7.25 per hour worked, if the employer offers health benefits, or $8.25 per hour worked, if the employer does not offer health benefits.

Crash victim dies

The 1998 Nissan pickup driven by Brandon Reno, 34, of McMinnville, is show after a crash on Feb. 17, 2014. Reno died from his injuries this week.

The 1995 Toyota Corolla driven by Glen Winton, 83, of Sparta, is facing in the opposite direction of his intended travel after he reportedly struck the 1998 Nissan pickup driven by Brandon Reno, 34, of McMinnville. Reno died from his injuries this week.

A 34-year-old McMinnville man who was seriously injured last week in a crash, on Highway 111, in Sparta, has died.

Legislature working on hundreds of proposed laws

Lawmakers are reviewing several proposed bills of interest during this week’s session of Tennessee General Assembly.

Softball teams to host Maroon-Gray Playday

As the official start of spring sports season draws closer, the two White County softball teams are gearing up for a big fundraiser on Saturday, Match 8th.
The White County High School and Middle School Warriorette teams will converge on the field at WCHS for 100 innings of Warriorette softball.

Eaglettes advance to Region 3A championship

The Van Buren County girls’ basketball team continues to inch ever closer to their goal of a trip to the TSSAA State tournament.
To get to that point, each team has to overcome some drama along the way and the Eaglettes did just that in their Region 3A semifinal game against Silverdale Academy (26-4).
Van Buren County (23-8) took the narrow 55-53 victory, but it took overtime to achieve that. Coming to an end. The Warriorette seniors, Kaydra Cash, Amber Hudgens, Loren Foster and Kelsey Roberts, sadly see the final seconds of their high school careers tick away. WCHS lost to Bradley Central 52-33 and ended their season at 22-8.
