World-class juggler

Bikers get ready to begin their travels across the beautiful White County countryside.

A bike race that has been dedicated to the memory of a man whose goal in life was to help Sparta once again become a thriving community is set for April 19 with the starting point for all races in the downtown area.
The 5th Annual Aaron Shafer Memorial Bike Race will be April 19, 2014. The race starts on North Main Street, at 9 a.m., with bikers traveling out Highway 84 to the Cherry Creek community. The race will end around 12:30 p.m.

Relay For Life fish fry

“Wenda’s Warriors” will be hosting a fish fry beginning at 11 a.m., March 29, and continuing until all the fish is gone. The event will be at 278 Oakwood Street. The fish plate will include fish, white or pinto beans, cornbread, cole slaw, dessert and a drink, all for $10. Other items are a fish sandwich will be $5; bowl of beans and cornbread, $3; barbecue sandwich, $5; and all drinks $1. Proceeds will benefit American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in White County.


Firefighters encouraging community fitness with workout program

Men, women, boys and girls are all participating in the fitness classes.

On a recent Thursday night, the Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department parking lot was completely packed with cars, but there was no fire or emergency call.
The volunteer firefighters were simply leading one of their workout classes held three times weekly at the department.
Tammy Kay Gongaware, who serves as the class instructor, begins the workout by reminding everyone to breathe, and encouraging them with the message of the day: You can’t be upset about what you didn’t achieve with the work you didn’t do.

Officials release information on stabbing death

Authorities have released information on the stabbing of a Putnam County couple, a case that has made national headlines and has White County ties.
In a media briefing, Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews stated that Courtney Cash, her boyfriend William Austin Johnson and Wayne Masciarella, who Andrews describes as a friend of the couple, had been out together. Andrews says the three returned to the couple’s Baxter home, on Rice Road, near the northern White County line, sometime between 3 and 4 a.m.
A struggle reportedly took place, which ended in the stabbing of Cash and Johnson.

Van Buren leaders are planning to sell 157 acres

Van Buren County Commission addressed a relief program, Van Buren County Ambulance Service write-offs, equal distribution of local option sales tax, land sales, and new business during the March 18 meeting.
The commission addressed a resolution to encourage the Tennessee General Assembly to fully fund the state tax relief program for the disabled and elderly property owners of Tennessee. The resolution would affect disabled and elderly citizens who meet a certain base income level. Through this resolution, many individuals in the past have been able to remain homeowners. The resolution passed.

Baseball team falls to arch rival Cookeville 9-5

The White County Baseball team fell to arch rival Cookeville 9-5 Thursday night in Cumberland County.
“We have got to stop letting things that we can’t control dictate the game,” head coach Shaun Floyd said. “We’ve got to sure some things up, we’ve got to learn that we can win. We can win, we just have to believe.”
The Cavaliers led the Warriors led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. WCHS was forced to take out starter Darin Cole due to injury after only two and one-thirds inning.

WCHS softball team loses to Livingston Academy

White County High School softball team took a 7-1 loss this past Friday when they traveled to Livingston to take on Livingston Academy.
The Warriorettes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
“We had an early lead backed by consistent pitching,” head coach Erin Replogle said. “They scored a few runs on a few errors. We just have to cut down on errors, and stay away from allowing big innings.”

Ira Lee Sullivan, 61, of Spencer, passed away March 20, 2014, at St. Thomas Mid-Town Hospital, in Nashville.
Mr. Sullivan was born Jan. 6, 1953, in Spencer, the son of Titus Sullivan and Cora Guy Sullivan.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., March 23, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Sodom Cemetery, in Spencer. The family will receive friends 9 a.m.-9 p.m., March 22, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., March 23, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lee Edward Tallent, 79, of Sparta, passed away March 20, 2014.
Mr. Tallent was born March 25, 1934, in Silva, Mo., to Buster Lee and Mattie May Faulk Tallent.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., March 25, 2014, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 11 a.m.-1 p.m., March 25, at the funeral home.

The 5th Annual Aaron Shafer Memorial Bike Race will be April 19, 2014, with the starting points in downtown Sparta.

The race starts on North Main Street at 9 a.m., April 19, with bikers traveling out Highway 84 in the Cherry Creek community. The race will end around 12:30 p.m.

The Fragrant Mushroom Time Trial will start at 2 p.m. The time trial will go out Highway 84 and right onto Blue Springs Road. Bikers will ride Blue Springs Road to Bethel Church of Christ where they will turn around and go back down Blue Springs Road onto Highway 84 and back to the start/finish line at North … CONTINUED
