Results from Tullahoma meet

A few members of the White County High School track and field team were in action Saturday at the Midstate Invitational in Tullahoma.
The junior/senior prom at WCHS diminished the number of local athletes competing, but several of the ones who were in action made good showings.
Coach David Bruce commented, “We had a good meet at Tullahoma even though several girls stayed home to get ready for the prom and several other boys and girls left early. County questions fairness of city’s sewer contract

County and city officials are still debating a proposed sewer contract more than a year after the legal document was drafted that outlined the stipulations for providing service to the Airport Industrial Park.
During a recent joint meeting of the county’s Steering Committees, commissioner Al Klee, who serves as chairman of the Industrial Park Advisory Committee, led the discussion that lasted more than an hour, with several county officials very bluntly expressing their concerns about the contract.
Klee said Jeni Lind Brinkman, of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, had reviewed the contract and highlighted specific items that were required by TDEC.

Jessie Melba Young Conley, 79, passed away April 25, 2014, at her residence.
Mrs. Conley was born April 30, 1934, in White County, the daughter of Vance Young and Nannie Marie Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. C. Conley Sr.; sons, James Curtis Conley, J. C. Conley, Jr.; and sister, Pauline Jewell Simmons.
She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Elaine Conley, of Sparta; brother, Elmer Farr, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and one grandson, Jason Curtis Conley.

Help Our Heroes golf scramble a big success

A true local hero. Kevin Honaker was the celebrity guest at the Help Our Heroes Scramble played April 19th at the Sparta Country Club. The event raised more than $6,000 to be donated to Semper Fi/America’s Fund. The organization uses their funds to assist and support injured and critically ill members of the Armed Forces and their families. WCHS baseball rolls to win over York Institute

Throwing to first. Ian Temple, who pitched the Warriors to the win over York Institute on Thursday, throws to first base for an out in a recent game. The Warriors are scheduled to host Cumberland County Monday at 5:30 p.m.

After being swept by Rhea County in their last 6AAA series, the Warrior baseball team took out their frustrations Thursday on the York Institute Dragons in a game that was postponed from earlier in the season.

Two are arrested after hit and run crashes

Sparta Police and White County Sheriff Department have arrested two White County residents after a reported string of hit-and-run crashes.
According to a report by Deputy Chris Clayburn, of White County Sheriff Department, at approximately 7:23 p.m. on April 17, 2014, he was dispatched to the scene of a hit and run accident at the Highway 84 Market.
A witness told Clayburn the vehicle struck a curb at the edge of the parking lot, then went over the curb, before striking a blue telephone booth and its support pole.

Grandel Lee Flatt, 78, of Spencer, passed away April 26, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Flatt was born Jan. 9, 1936, in Knoxville, the son of Logan Flatt and Lora Hale Flatt.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., April 30, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends 3-9 p.m., April 29, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., April 30, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Warriorette softball suffers two more 6AAA losses

After winning three of their first four District 6AAA games, the White County High School softball team has found the going tough lately having lost their last four league games.
Offensive woes continue to haunt the Warriorettes as they were shutout 4-0 by Stone Memorial on Wednesday at home and then were defeated 11-1 at Warren County on Thursday.

WCSD confirms identity of human remains

Detective Chris Isom of the White County Sheriff Department has confirmed the identity of human remains discovered recently in White County as those of John Howard Shoemaker III, 36, of Sparta.
The remains were uncovered in an undisclosed location in White County on the evening of Thurs., April 10, 2014, however, because of the nature of the investigation, the department was unable to release the identity of the deceased until now.
The department is continuing its investigation, and information about the location or suspected cause of death cannot be released at this time.
Along with WCSD, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is also investigating the case.

TWRA official releases name of kayaking fatality

embers of various emergency services departments responded to the scene of a kayaking accident, on April 23, 2014, on Calfkiller River. Rescuers had to access the two individuals through the back side of Gillen Subdivision, which borders the river.

Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency has released information, including the names of the victim and survivor, about the April 23, 2014, kayaking accident on the Calfkiller River.
According to Dan Hicks of TWRA, Jedidiah Selby, 24, of Crossville, died when his kayak overturned and he was sucked into the draw at the base of the dam near the old water treatment plant.

Barbara Mae Sparks, 66, of Sparta, passed away April 24, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sparks was born April 28, 1947, in Sparta, the daughter of Hubert Lee and Daisy McCloud Lee.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Sparks was preceded in death by her parents; brother and his wife, Bobby Gene Lee and Linda Dennis Lee; sisters, Emogene Brady, Charlene Dennis; two brothers-in-law, Millard Young, Kenneth Sparks; and special friend, Bonnell Murdock.

Susan Hunter, 64, formerly of Sparta, passed away April 24, 2014, in Chicago, Ill.
Ms. Hunter was born March 5, 1950, in Sparta, to John Beecher Hunter Sr. and Nancy Jo Lee Hunter.
She was a retired horse trainer and was very active in the Tennessee Walking Horse Association.
She is survived by her brothers, Bob Hunter and wife Tina, of Rockford, John and Jan Hunter, of Sparta, Lee and Linda Hunter, of Cookeville; special friend, Lenny Siegel, of Chicago; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

James Thurman Rittenberry

James Thurman Rittenberry, 85, of Sparta, passed away April 23, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Rittenberry was born Oct. 7, 1928, in White County, to James Alvin Rittenberry and Fannie Ann Brown Davis Rittenberry.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Rittenberry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian Leona Savage Rittenberry; and a brother, Roy Gene Rittenberry.
Survivors include his son, Keith Rittenberry, of Boise, Idaho; brother, Carl Rittenberry, of Sparta; sister, Ruby Johnson, of Walling; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
