Barbara Jean Rice

Barbara Jean Rice, 71, a Green Hill community resident and White County native, passed away, May 30, 2014, at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Rice was born March 16, 1943.

The co-owner of Rainbow Flowers and Gifts, retired final inspector at A.O. Smith and member of Quebeck Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Ernest McClellan and Lillian Louise Odell Matthews.

Mrs. Rice was married Aug. 12, 1961, to James Leroy Rice, of the Green Hill Community.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Linda Faye and Charlie Ray Barks.

Have you been challenged to do the 24-Hour Cold Water Challenge? White County residents are challenging each other to get doused in water to support the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. If challenged, you can donate $10 and get wet, or pay $100 and stay dry! Sparta Assistant Fire Chief Lanny Selby got in the spirit as he prepared to be sprayed with water on May 30.

Ronald Wayne McCoy, of Sparta, passed away May 29, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Mr. McCoy was born Sept. 15, 1947, to Thelbert McCoy and Flora Jones McCoy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., June 1, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m., May 31, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., June 1, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Four from White County honored by TTU College of Business

Four Sparta natives received scholarships from Tennessee Tech University’s College of Business.

Dylan Henry, a senior management information systems student, received the Leroy and Peggy Mackie endowed scholarship. He is a graduate of White County High School.

Hannah Mackie, a sophomore basic business major, received the Fitzpatrick family endowed scholarship. She is a graduate of Daniel 1 Academy.

Jesse Welch, a senior international business and cultures major, received the L.W. Legge Agency scholarship. He is a graduate of White County High School.

Dania Witt, a freshman basic business student, received the Floyd Null memorial scholarship. She is a graduate of White County High School.

As a Girl Scout Daisy (kindergarten and first grade), your daughter will foster new friendships, develop leadership skills, help her community and so much more. 4th Annual Harold Blankenship Memorial Big Bass Tournament is May 31

The 4th Annual Harold Blankenship Memorial Big Bass Tournament will be Saturday, May 31, 2014, beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing through 7 a.m., Sunday. Muncey Rules apply. Weigh-in will be at Ragland Bottom. Big bass tickets are $20. Poundage pot is $20. For tickets or more information call Troy at (931) 510-7715. Blankenship, a well-known and well-loved law enforcement official, had worked at White County Sheriff Department in the early 1970’s and moved to Sparta Police Department where he remained until his retirement.


Bailey donates to agricultural facility

State Representative Paul Bailey (left) recently donated $500 to White County High School Agricultural Facility. Pictured is Kyler Moore, of the White County High School Ag Department. CofC members visit historical marker

UDC Chapter members recognize ancestors

At a recent meeting of the Captain Sally Tompkins Chapter #2123, United Daughters of the Confederacy, four chapter members were presented with Certificates recognizing their ancestors who served as Confederate soldiers during the War Between the States, 1861-1865.  To receive this recognition, members are required to research and prove the honorable military service of the ancestor as well as their genealogical lineage to him.

Marr Temples received certificates on six of her ancestors from Georgia:  James J. Beddingfield, John Beddingfield, Solomon Beddingfield, Henry Hosch, John Jacob Hosch and William Hill Hosch.   Amanda Roberts received a certificate on her ancestor, Hilliard J. Terry, who served in the Alabama Infantry.

Vietnam Vets give away bikes to WCMS students

Two White County Middle School students were the lucky recipients of bikes from the Vietnam Veterans of White County.  The group gave a bike to one boy and one girl whose names were randomly drawn from a box. Students were given chances to win by having good grades, conduct and attendance. This was the first year for the bike giveaway, but the group is already planning to expand the giveaway to four bikes next year. Pictured are the students, Cindy Wilson and Christopher Murdock. Pictured with the students, left to right, are Vietnam Veterans Pete Broehl, Jack Bussell, Paul Steele and Fred Graham.
