Cavaliers bring Warrior baseball season to an end

After the first two games of the District 6AAA semifinal series ended with lop-sided wins by both teams, Wednesday’s rubber game came down to a pitcher’s duel and Cookeville came out on top with the 3-1 victory.

Warrior football competes in spring scrimmage

Though missing several players due to them participating in other sports, the Warrior football team traveled to Smith County Thursday for a scrimmage.
The competition was about half way through the team’s allotted time for spring practice.
After having lost several key players to graduation, the inexperience of the Warriors showed in this early outing, but it is still three months until they hit the field for real.

WCHS soccer falls in championship game

District 6AAA runner-ups. For the first time in school history, the White County High School soccer team played in the district championship game. They were defeated 4-1 by Cookeville, but will play in the Region 3AAA semifinals at East Hamilton.

Playing in their first-ever District 6AAA championship game, the White County High School soccer team came up short by a score of 4-1 to the Cookeville Cavaliers.
Playing what their coach, Sam Matson, described as the best half of soccer his team had played all season long, the Cavaliers built a 3-0 halftime and coasted in for the win.

Softball season ends at hands of Warren County

For the Warriorette softball team, the District 6AAA tournament began on Friday with a thrilling extra inning win over Warren County. Five days later, the Lady Pioneers avenged that loss and brought the Warriorette season to an end with a 4-3 come-from-behind win.

Symantha Aline Davis, 48, of Joelton, formerly of Sparta, passed away May 8, 2014, at Skyline Medical Center, in Nashville.
Ms. Davis was born Nov. 29, 1965, in Van Buren County.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Edward Davis; brother, Lester Earl Davis; sister, Jenny Ann Randolph; grandparents, Wallace M. Davis and Virgie Moore Davis Miller, Noah Hull and Katherine M. Roberts Usrey; and nephews, Charles Davis Jr. and James R. Randolph III.

Amanda Arlena Sherrell Bumbalough, 96, of Sparta, passed away May 9, 2014, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mrs. Bumbalough was born Sept. 4, 1917, in White County, to Bird Joseph and Naoma Frances Pistole Sherrell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hershel Bumbalough.
Survivors include her three sons, Terry (Marine) Bumbalough, of Louisville, Kentucky, Robert (Betty) Bumbalough, of Hendersonville, Johnny Bumbalough, of Sparta; two daughter, Betty (Durelle) Henry, of Old Hickory, Norma Ruth (Don) Huddleston, of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Glen Emit Winton, 1930-2014

Glen Emit Winton, 83, of Sparta, passed away May 8, 2014, at Life Care of Sparta.
Mr. Winton was born June 15, 1930, in Alpine.
He was the son of Issac Emit Winton and Flora Catherine Bilbrey Winton.
He served his country in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Michigan.
Mr. Winton and his brother-in-law, Arthur Mitchell, owned and operated the Factory Outlet, in 1956. When Mr. Mitchell retired, Mr. Winton changed the name to Winton’s World.

Lucy Belle Gamble Roberts, 97, passed away May 3, 2014 at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Roberts was born March 9, 1917, the daughter of Lewis Breedlove and Susie Hamock Breedlove, of Blackstone, Virginia.
Preceded in death by her parents; husbands Jack Gamble, Clyde Roberts; son, Richard Gamble; four brothers; and four sisters.
She is survived by her son, Dewey Gamble, of North Caroline; stepchildren, Dorothy Wilson, Buddy Roberts, Steve Roberts, Charles Roberts; brother, Shirley T. Breedlove, of El Paso, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Andrew Gamble, Jackson Gamble, Debra Matz, Dewey Gamble, Richard Gamble; and several great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great- grandchildren.
