Click It or Ticket campaign kicks off in White County

Deputies Austin Phifer and James Blankenship are keeping their eyes open for drivers not heeding the seat belt law.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office is once again partnering with local law enforcement agencies to spread the word about seatbelt safety, and White County Sheriff Department has joined in the effort to educate residents.
According to the GHSO, every hour, at least one person in the United States dies because he or she was not properly restrained. Failure to use a seat belt reportedly contributes to more fatalities than any other single traffic safety-related behavior.

Girl rescued after 50-foot cliff fall

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad was dispatched to the southwestern border of White County on the evening of May 24 to rescue a minor girl who had fallen off a 50-foot cliff.
According to Rescue Squad Chief Mike McLatchy, the rescue squad was dispatched to a location approximately a mile off Joppa Road, in Walling at approximately 8:46 p.m.
There was reportedly no cell phone or radio service, and the area was so thickly wooded there was no skylight.
The lack of service and pitch black conditions “complicated things,” McLatchy stated, as rescuers had to hike the mile into the woods to determine what supplies and tools were required, … CONTINUED

Evelyn Aileen Prater Nash, 1932-2014

Evelyn Aileen Prater Nash, 81, of Sparta, passed away May 27, 2014, at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Nash was born Nov. 14, 1932, in White County, to James Edward and Magdalene Blaylock Prater.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Terry Glenn Nash; and a brother, Edward Wayne Prater.
Survivors include her husband, J.C. Nash, of Sparta; two sons, Jerry Lynn Nash, of Atlanta, Georgia, James Michael Fox, of Cookeville; two grandchildren, Chrissy White, of Sparta, J.J. Fox, of Sparta; two great-grandchildren, Aaron White, Ryan White; and two sisters, Geneva Scott, of Manchester, and Glenda Faye Griffith, … CONTINUED


Power outages

Sparta Electric customers have experienced two power outages within 24 hours. On May 28, according to L.R. West, director of Sparta Electric System, a wire burned apart on North Spring Street, which caused the outage during the early afternoon hours. Then, during the pre-dawn hours of May 29, a wire burned apart near White County Public Library, on North Church Street.


Babe Ruth season gets going

The 2014 edition of local Babe Ruth baseball action got underway on Monday, May 19th.
This season there are six teams in the league with approximately 70 players. The teams are Red Sox, Braves, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Brewers and Yankees. James Snodgrass is the president of this year’s league.

John Henry Nash

John Henry Nash, 91, of Cookeville, went home to be with the Lord, on May 27, 2014, while residing at Bethesda Health Care.
Mr. Nash was born Jan. 11, 1923, in White County, to Henry Laramore Nash and Jennie Lee “Cannie” Sliger Nash.
He served in the battle of Iwo Jima, in the U.S. Army, during World War II.
He owned and operated Spring and Maple Exxon Station, in Cookeville, for many years. He was also known for selling fruit and vegetables around Cookeville for many years out of the back of his truck. He loved the Lord, his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Mr. Nash attended … CONTINUED

Plant sale June 7

The Grounds Committee of the May Cravath Wharton Association under the umbrella of Uplands Village will hold a perennial plant sale 8 a.m.-3 p.m., June 7, at the intersection of US 70 and East Main Street, in Pleasant Hill. Proceeds from the plant sale are used for beautification projects in the Uplands Village. Look for hostas, Iris, Veronica, peonies, coreopsis, blackeyed Susan, geraniums, day lilies, and much more.
