Benefit to help Sandy Cunningham

There will be a benefit for Sandy Cunningham to help with medical and funeral expenses in the death of her son, Casey Cunningham. The event will be Oct. 4, 2014, at Hensley’s Chapel Community Center, starting with breakfast at 8 a.m. There will also be an all-day yard sale and bake sale; horseshoe tournament at 1 p.m.; auction at 3 p.m. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. Volleyball and soccer district action

Both the White County High School volleyball and soccer teams were in District 6AAA action on Tuesday.

The Warriorette volleyballers traveled to McMinnville and defeated Warren County 3-1.  The WCHS soccer team didn’t fare as well as they were defeated at home by Cumberland County 3-0.

Taste of Home Cooking School gears up for Oct. 14

The 14th annual Taste of Home Cooking School returns to Sparta with lots of fun and prizes in store. The event begins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at White County Agriculture Complex, 564 Hale St., in Sparta. Michelle “Red” Roberts will once again be hosting the two-hour show. There will once again be a food finale and door prizes to give away. Tickets are $35 for premium reserved seating and $12 for general admission. Dr. Margret Inez Wrenn Rhinehart

Dr. Margret Inez Wrenn Rhinehart, age 89, a Spencer resident and native of Collegedale, passed away Sept. 23, 2014, at her residence following a brief illness.

Dr. Rhinehart was loved and cherished by her many patients and community as a practicing physician in Spencer, 1951-2001. She was a unique and giving individual, a pillar of the community and will be missed deeply by the residents of Van Buren County and the surrounding communities. She authored a book on the cemeteries of Van Buren County.

Dr. Rhinehart was married to Shelby Aaron Rhinehart who preceded her in death, on Sept. 19, 2002. Her soon-to-be husband was one of her … CONTINUED

Elks Lodge fish dinner

District 7 Town Hall meeting

County commissioners for District 7, Mack Johnson and Stanley Neal, will be conducting a Town Hall meeting, 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Northfield Elementary. All residents of the district are encouraged to attend. In addition, State Representative Paul Bailey and White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson will be in attendance.


One transported in Smithville Highway crash

Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, Cassville Volunteer Fire Department and White County Sheriff Department responded to a two-vehicle crash on Smithville Highway near Taco Metals. One patient was transported by White County Emergency Medical Services for medical treatment. Tennessee Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation of the scene. More details will be released as they become available.


Laura Ann Parker

Laura Ann Parker, 54 of Sparta, passed away peacefully on Sept. 22, 2014, at her residence, surrounded by her loved ones.

Ms. Parker was born July 3, 1960, in Cherrystone, Virginia, to The Rev. Irving Parker and Peggy Bennett Parker.

She was a member of Derossett Brethren in Christ Church and the director of Mercy Ministries.

Ms. Parker was preceded in death by her mother and a sister-in-law, Anita Kay Parker.

Survivors include her son, Ozzy Osborne Reynolds and wife Ann, of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters, Michelle Ann Zayas, of Sparta, Laura Danielle Zayas, of Sparta; father, The Rev. Irving Parker Sr., of Sparta; grandchildren, Aleeyah Michelle … CONTINUED


September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Sparta Mayor Jeff Young and County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson signed a proclamation today acknowledging September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. They are pictured with Vickie Wilson, Amanda Barlow and Ann Stamps, who taught a workshop to employees of the White County Jail (also pictured), about mental illness, Alzheimer’s, alcohol and drugs and suicide prevention.


Mary Louise Johnson Pugh

Mary Louise Johnson Pugh, 78, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 22, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Pugh was born March 10, 1936, in White County, to Lawton and Cora Lack Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard Pugh; great-grandson, James Michael Johnson; and two brothers, L. J. Johnson and Dewey Johnson.

She was a shirt factory worker and had a great love for her beloved dogs.

Mrs. Pugh is survived by her three sons, Randy (Vicki) Rutherford, Anthony (Teresa) Rutherford, Michael Johnson; three daughters, Katie (Frank) Miller, Regina (Mark) Cope, Bridget Sparks; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Dorothy Exum, … CONTINUED


Piggly Wiggly sign going up
