Library’s annual Used Book Sale a success

At this year’s annual Used Book Sale, the Friends of the White County Public Library raised $2,223.91 for the library.  The library is thankful for all the volunteers who made the book sale possible.


Step by Step Walking Toward a Cure set for this Saturday

Stronger Marriage Workshop this weekend

Central Church of Christ will be holding a Stronger Marriage Workshop.  Those attending do not need to be members of Central Church of Christ.  The event is open to the public.  The workshop will take place Friday, October 3 from 6:45 p.m.–9:00 p.m. and on  Saturday, October 4 from 8:45 a.m.–12 p.m at Central Church of Christ.  Free childcare is available.   Those attending must preregister with an email to thegreatestcommandislove@gmail.com stating the name(s) of those attending, and if one or both spouses will be attending.  For further information, call Central Church of Christ at 836-2874. 


Playground Naming Party today

From 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. today at Dogwood Park in Cookeville, the Playground Naming Party will be held to decide the name of the Cookeville Community Playground.  The event will feature many free events for kids, including a dunking booth, a silly photo booth, face painting, balloon makers, pizza, snacks, and games.  From 5:30 until 6:15, Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, and Mr. Smee will be there.  A photographer will be present to take a free photo with the children with a character.  Those who submit a proposed name for the playground could win a cash


Richard III starts this weekend

From October 3 until October 11, audiences can see one of Shakespeare’s works, Richard III, free of charge at the Dogwood Performance Pavilion at 30 E. Broad Street in Cookeville.  All shows start at 7 p.m, and are open to the public.

Amy Lee Harney, 40, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 30, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Million Dollar Mile Yard Sale set for Oct. 4

We invite visitors to discover the great vintage antique shops, family restaurants and Southern hospitality this area has to offer. Many set-up areas are available, some of which will be around the courthouse. The Farmers’ Market will also be open. Voter registration deadline Oct. 6

Eligible Tennessee residents have until Oct. 6 to register if they wish to vote in the Nov. 4 election. Volleyball gets two more wins

The Warriorette volleyball team added two more wins to their worksheet with victories over Jackson County (2-1) and Gordonsville (2-1).  They will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Coffee County on Thursday.


Quebeck potluck and hayride

Quebeck/Walling Community Club will host a potluck supper followed by a hayride, on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at Quebeck Community Center, 375 Quebeck Rd. Bring a side dish, entrée to share for the potluck.  There will be trick-or-treating in the woods and a bonfire, too. Marshmallows to roast and candy in the straw for the kids, plus some other treats for the folks – young and old alike. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., meal at 6 p.m. For more information call (931) 657-1009.


Sandra Elaine Lunsford Billings

Sandra Elaine Lunsford Billings, 68, of Walling passed away Sept. 29, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Billings was born March 29, 1946, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Amy Babcock Lunsford and Hugh Benton.

She was a former district sales manager for the Keeble-Kellogg Company and was a member of the Ole Country Church.

In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, M.C. Billings, and very special aunt, Byrd Lunsford.

Survivors include her son, David England, of West Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Valerie England; mother, Amy Lunsford, of Knoxville; stepson, Tracey Billings, of Walling; brother, Ben Lunsford, of Knoxville; nieces, Christy Lunsford, Stacey … Read More


Benefit for Virgel Randolph

A spaghetti/chili dinner and auction will be held on Sat., Nov. 8 at Sparta Civic Center, 5-7 p.m to raise funds for a surgical procedure for Virgel Randolph, who suffers from a medical condition that is progressively paralyzing him. Tickets are $6.00 and desserts are $1.00. Billy Elton Norris

Billy Elton Norris, 64, lost his battle with cancer, on Sept. 26, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

The family is having a Celebration of Life memorial at their home, 3-6 p.m., Oct. 2, 2014.

In  lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Tennessee School for the Blind, 115 Stewarts Ferry Pike, Nashville, TN  37214 (His granddaughter, Lilly, attends school at  TSB.)

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
