City of Sparta moves forward with The Retail Coach

In a unanimous vote, Mayor Jeff Young and Sparta’s aldermen have decided to revitalize Sparta and White County and pursue retail via The Retail Coach.  Over the past several meetings, the city council has discussed using The Retail Coach as a tool to revive the economy of Sparta and White County.  While some argue that Sparta should focus on industry, some board members feel that retail—an avenue that Sparta has not yet explored to this extent—would bring better jobs and dollars into the county.  Read the full story in today’s edition of the Expositor.


Gas prices update

September 8- Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.20/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.44/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Tennessee during the past week, prices yesterday were 17.3 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 3.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 2.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 13.7 … CONTINUED

Taste of Home Cooking School gears up for its 14th year in Sparta

The 14th annual Taste of Home Cooking School returns to Sparta with lots of fun and prizes in store.
Before the show begins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, there will be many vendor booths to browse.
Michelle “Red” Roberts will once again be hosting the two-hour show and will demonstrate for attendees how to use household products in new and exciting ways. There will once again be a food finale and door prizes to give away.Tickets are once again $35 for premium reserved seating and $12 for general admission. Doors open at 4 p.m. for reserved seating ticketholders and at 5 p.m. for general admission tickets. … CONTINUED


Rescue Squad recovers sunken vehicle

At approximately 4:15 p.m., Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and Sparta Police Patrolman David Grissom responded to the boat ramp on Highway 84, where a vehicle slid into the Calfkiller River while trying to drop a small fishing boat into the water. Divers T.C. Good and Robert E. Lee swam down to the truck and hooked a chain to the front end so it could be pulled out by a tow truck. No one was injured.


Motorcycle crash at Wheat’s Curve

Emergency responders are on the scene of a motorcycle crash with injuries at Wheat’s Curve going onto Belvue Drive. Details will be released as they are available.


Vehicle fire on 111

Firefighters from several districts are currently responding to a vehicle fire on Highway 111 near the Old Kentucky Road exit. Use caution if traveling this route.


Water line ruptured

A ruptured water line in the vicinity of  Scepter Hardwoods, on McMinnville Highway, has left several City of Sparta customers without water since early this morning. According to Sparta Mayor Jeff Young, workers are repairing the line and will hopefully have the problem fixed as soon as possible.

No water on McMinnville Highway

According to a resident on McMinnville Highway, near the Lake Forest area, there is no water service as of now. SpartaLive.com will check into this matter and find out if this is an isolated incident.
