Early morning structure fire

Firefighters are currently responding to a structure fire on Bunker Hill Road. The kitchen of the residence is reportedly on fire with flames shooting out the back door.

The Warrior football team hosts Rhea County in both team’s District 6AAA opener.  Kick off is at 6:30 p.m.  Tailgate party set to begin at 4:30.


Calfkiller Brewing Co. at Taste of Tennessee

Today, Calfkiller Brewing Company is representing Sparta at the 2014 Tennessee State Fair Craft Brewers Festival.  More than 35 brewers from across the state are present, including Memphis, Jackson, Nashville, Franklin, Sparta, Chattanooga, Tullahoma, Knoxville, Bristol, Kingsport, Maryville and Jonesborough, offering over 100 beers on tap.  The event begins at 7 p.m. for general admission.


Pre-registration for Bike Sparta at The Fragrant Mushroom

Pre-registration for Bike Sparta will be at The Fragrant Mushroom.  The store is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.


10 years ago, demolition for the new library began

Ten years ago, the home of the late Harry Camp was torn down to make space for the new library on North Church Street.


Elks to hold craft bazaar

The Cookeville-Sparta Elks Lodge 2863 will be holding a craft bazaar on Oct. 18, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at Sparta Civic Center, 514 E. Bockman Way. If you’d like to reserve booth space, the cost is $25 for a 10X10 space. For more information or to request an application, please call 931-858-0930 or email dandktheboro@gmail.com. A portion of the proceeds and donations from the bazarre will go to Elks charities, which support veterans as well as drug awareness.
