Taste of Home Cooking School is Oct. 14

The 14th annual Taste of Home Cooking School returns to Sparta with lots of fun and prizes in store. The show begins at 7 p.m., Oct. 14, 2014, at White County Ag Complex, 564 Hale St., in Sparta. Michelle “Red” Roberts will once again be hosting the two-hour show. Tickets are once again $35 for premium reserved seating and $12 for general admission. Doors open at 4 p.m. for reserved seating ticketholders and at 5 p.m. for general admission tickets. For tickets, call (931) 836-3284 or come by The Expositor office, located at 34 W. Bockman Way, in Sparta.


Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.12/g on Sept. 28, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.34/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.Including the change in gas prices in Tennessee during the past week, prices yesterday were 9.5 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 8.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.


Elks Lodge celebrates Oktoberfest

Elks Lodge 2863 will celebrate Oktoberfest, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Oct. 3, at the lodge, 4424 Old Kentucky Rd., in Sparta. The meal will include brats, potato salad, coleslaw and dessert for $7. For more information call (931) 858-0930.


Highland Rim District Meeting of the GFWC held Sept. 27

Sparta Woman’s Club and the Renaissance Women’s Club hosted the Highland Rim District Meeting of the GFWC of Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, in Sparta. Seated at the head table were (L-R) Dian Rayfield Highland, Rim chaplain; Nancy Hale, Highland Rim secretary; Sherry Hickey, Highland Rim vice president and president of the Sparta club; guest speaker Pat Williams, president of the GFWC of Tennessee; Renee Keene, Highland Rim district president; Mary Ann Scott, Highland Rim treasurer; and Cheryl Thomas, Highland Rim director of Junior Clubs.  The Highland Rim District is made up of Women’s Clubs from Sparta, Cookeville, Livingston and Tullahoma.


George Daniel “Danny” Matz II

George D. “Danny” Matz II, 64, passed away Sept. 20, 2014, as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident, in Wayne County, Kentucky.

Mr. Matz was born in Elyria, Ohio, and lived most of his life in the Lakeland, Florida, area.

He worked for IMC more than 25 years. He was U.S. Marine, serving during the Vietnam era. He loved motorcycles and jeeps.

Mr. Matz was preceded in death by a son, Chad Aaron Matz.

Survivors include his wife, Cherry, of Auburndale, Florida; son, Erek Matz, of Leesburg, Florida; daughter, Farrah Matz Thompson, of Mulberry, Florida; and several stepchildren, brothers, sisters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

WCSD warns of new phone scam

Detective Chris Isom, of White County Sheriff Department, is warning residents of a phone scam that has targeted White County residents. Allegedly, an individual has called residents, claiming to be a lieutenant with the Williamson County Sheriff Department. This individual has reportedly told residents that there are warrants for their arrests, but that they can be cleared up if a sizeable fee is paid. “This is a scam,” Isom states. The Sheriff Department is currently investigating this scam and Isom states that the lieutenant at the Williamson County Sheriff Department that the individual has addressed himself as does not exist.
