Taylor speaks at Sparta Woman’s Club meeting

The guest speaker at the Oct. 6, 2014, meeting of the Sparta Woman’s Club was Shelley Taylor, of Damsel in Defense (931-260-5611). She gave a presentation on personal protection and demonstrated many of her company’s products. At the next meeting on Nov. 6, the guest speaker will be Jeff Herel, of Herel’s Half Acre Farms, to give a presentation on conservation and bees. BonDeCroft Elementary PTO Fall Festival

BonDeCroft Elementary PTO Fall Festival 2014 will be 5-9 p.m. Nov. 1, at the school. Free dinner will be provided by BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department. There will also be free music and dancing; a free costume contest for all ages, including adults; and a free not-so-spooky kid zone. Plus, there will be carnival games with prizes, a 27-inch tall dual slide, a velcro jump, pumpkin decorating and so much more.

Magdalene Ellen Gorski, 82, passed away Oct. 8, 2014, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Gorski was born July 19, 1932, in Herbert and Ethel Hutton Hicks.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Anthony Gorski; daughters, Almeda Thompkins, Colleen Gorski; and sisters, Dorothy Irwin, Frances O’Dell and Carol Snyder.

Survivors include her daughters, Ruth Ann Carr (Gordon), of Bainbridge, New York, Elaine Howell (Lee), of Brunswick, Georgia, Jody Gorski, Teresa Murdock, Irline Stewart (Otis), all of Sparta; grandchildren, Trisha Gross, Kristen Parker, Jennifer Scott, Robert Gorski III, Kevin Howell, David Tompkins, Jesse Tompkins, Elizabeth Guilbault, Robert Miller, Gary Modlin, Victor Modlin, Coleen Allen, Stanley … CONTINUED

Ersie Rosect Davis, 90, of Spencer, passed away Oct. 8, 2014.

She was born March 13, 1924, in Spencer, the daughter of Henry McBride and Nettie Roberts McBride.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Oct. 11, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Molloy Cemetery, in Spencer. The family will receive friends 4-9 p.m., Oct. 9; 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Oct. 10; and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Oct. 11, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Chana Faye Bryant, 50, of Rock Island, passed away Oct. 7, 2014, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.

Ms. Bryant was born Dec. 9, 1963, in Spencer, the daughter of Bennie Bryant and Charlotte Certain.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Oct. 10, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Long Cemetery, in Spencer. The family will receive friends 4-9 p.m., Oct. 9, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Oct. 10, at the funeral home.

Courthouse to close early for Liberty Square

Allie Attress Johnson Hudson Cantrell

Allie Attress Johnson Hudson Cantrell, 95, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 7, 2014, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mrs. Cantrell was born Dec. 30, 1918, in DeKalb County, to Ike Davis Johnson and Era Mai Rigsby Johnson.

She was a retired shirt factory worker. She loved to quilt, and it was a treat for anyone who visited her home to enjoy her cooking.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Layron Hudson; son, Malcolm Hudson; granddaughter, Kim Ward; grandson, Joe Dewayne Dickerson; and siblings, Wilson, Ruby, Henry, Ellen, David, Harvey and Jody.

2nd Annual Superheroes Ball set for Nov. 15

From 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Tennessee Technological University Memorial Gym. the 2nd Annual Superheroes Ball will be held to benefit the American Cancer Society.  This is a mother/son date night event.  Tickets are $20 and are available at the Cookeville American Cancer Society office, Fun Factory, The Little Gym Cookeville, and Tennessee Print Masters.  A ticket includes admission to the ball, on-site activities, and food.  Children’s tickets also include a t-shirt.  T-shirts are available for adults for $10.

 


MAKERS set for Oct. 14

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Cookeville Performing Arts Center, MAKERS will continue with Women in Space.  MAKERS is a six-part PBS series following the impact of women over the last 50 years in six industries– comedy. politics, space, war, business, and Hollywood.  Women in Space begins with women pioneers in the United States space program and follows the next generation of female engineers, mathematicians, and astronauts.  This event is free and open to the public.
