Discover Sparta to meet Oct. 2

Discover Sparta will meet on Thurs., Oct. 2nd at 6 p.m. at Oldham Theatre to discuss some proposed solutions for the local economy. Some topics to be discussed are the Adopt-A-Building program, Art n Ale Trail, Christmas in Our Town and many others. The community is invited to attend.


Calfkiller Ride to the Sky set for Oct. 25

On Oct. 25, Calfkiller Ride to the Sky will take cyclists on 22 mile or 62 mile rides along the Calfkiller River. The event will close with live music, barbeque, and drinks.  Proceeds will benefit Carmen’s Fund.  For more information, visit http://ridetothesky.org/.

Rock Island 5-miler set for Oct. 11

As part of the annual series of Tennessee State Parks Running Tour, The Rock Island 5-Miler is set for Oct. 11.  The five-mile follows roadways and trails throughout the park, with a moderate to strenuous difficulty level.  Walkers are welcome, as well.  Register online at raceonline.com.

TSBDC at TTU hosts business planning seminar Oct. 14

 Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Tennessee Tech University will host a seminar about writing a business plan Oct. 14. Brandon Brown and Andrew Bryant will lead the free seminar and discuss tips and tricks to writing a business plan, with emphasis on obtaining financing. Seminar attendees will receive a planning workbook as well. Business Planning 101 will be 5:30-7:30 p.m.,  Oct. 14, in Johnson Hall 218, at 1105 N. Peachtree Ave., on the TTU campus. Deadline Oct. 10 for Tennessee Schools to Enter Environmental Programs

The deadline for the Good Sports Always Recycle program Oct. 10, 2014. Schools may enter their environmental programs in the 21st Annual school challenge, and the top 10 Tennessee school environmental programs will each be awarded $1,000 to recognize their efforts. In addition, one lucky school will win the Good Sports Always Recycle Sustainability Steward award and bring home $1,500.  K-12 schools in Tennessee can nominate their school to win at www.Eastman.com/GSAR or email jwiggins@akinsps.com for a nomination form. Linda Diane Cope Delong, 53, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 27, 2014, at her residence.

A memorial service will be noon, Oct. 4, 2014, at Doyle Methodist Church.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dahlia Sparkman, 96, of Doyle, passed away Sept. 30, 2014, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Paul Thomas Stevenson

Paul Thomas Stevenson, 66, of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away Sept. 29, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Stevenson was a sales consultant, with 42 years of service with Tom James Clothiers and won several awards for his accomplishments.

He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, in Franklin. Mr. Stevenson was also a member of the Wednesday Richland Lunch Group and the Tuesday Night Monthly Group. Mr. Stevenson graduated from Tennessee Tech, in 1970, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

He was preceded in death by father, Thomas W. Stevenson; sister, Kathleen Stevenson; and father-in-law, Herman Masters.
