North Sparta Church of God, at 335 N. Spring St., in Sparta, will host a Christmas Craft Bazaar, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6. Lots of great holiday crafts and products from many vendors. Marsha Lee Coffey-Harrell

Marsha Lynn Coffey-Harrell, 50, of Sparta, received her heavenly body on Nov. 26, 2014.

She was a true joy to all her family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Melanie, Jennifer, Justin and Darren; loving life partner, Michael Young, of Sparta; parents, Dortha Harrell, of Washburn, Tennessee, Allen and Mary Harrell, of Sparta; beloved sisters, Heather Phifer, Pam Munsey; grandchildren, Landon, Kaylee, Hylan, Elijah, Justin, Brianna; nephews, Matthew Munsey, Cliff Phifer Cole Phifer; and life-long best friend, Pam Bolden.

The service will be private at the family’s request.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Margaret Joan O’Dana

Margaret Joan O’Dana, 95, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Mrs. O’Dana was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Lawrence Spaeder and Rebecca Schneider Spaeder.

There will be a period of visitation with the family 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Nov. 29, 2014, at the funeral home.

No service was announced.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Paul Edward Miller

Paul Edward Miller, 60, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Miller was born March 17, 1954, in Pikeville, Tennessee, to William Henderson and Rosa Pauline Scott Miller.

He retired from the City of Sparta Street Department after 23 years of service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Linda Davis, Carolyn Miller and Katherine Peppers.

Betty Jean Howard Mabe Jones

Betty Jean Howard Mabe Jones, 82, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 25, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Jones was born March 12, 1932, in Cairo, Illinois to Haskel and Gladys Howard.

She was a homemaker and was an avid gardener.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Jones; father of her children, Sheliah Mabe; son, J.D. Mabe; and granddaughter, Diana Michelle Mabe.

Riverbank Books destroyed in fire

Last night, firefighters worked into the late hours to battle the blazes of a fire at the building on Bockman Way home to Riverbank Books and Southern Technology.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  Click through the gallery to see photos of Riverbank Books from this morning.

Holiday Festival set for Nov. 28-30

2014 Christmas Carnival set for Dec. 6

From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Dec. 6, local families are invited to tour the Cookeville Depot Museum for the 2014 Christmas Carnival.  There will be games, balloons, magic, live reindeer, prizes, face painting, cookies, caroling, elves, a selfie booth, and Santa Claus himself.  Families are encouraged to bring their children and their cameras for the holiday fun.

Thanksgiving takes on a new meaning for Johnson

A man who has reached out to help others in time of sickness is now facing a life and death battle of his own that has caused him to reflect on his life and the many blessings he has received.  Larry “Bubba” Johnson realizes that his Thanksgiving holiday this year has taken on a new meaning. Although he is strong-willed and has a constant faith in God, he is facing a battle that sometimes seems uphill – he has been diagnosed with colon cancer and is facing surgery in December.
