Flight of the Turkeys 5k this Saturday

Sparta-White County YMCA has announced their annual  5K run, which they are calling the Flight of the Turkeys.
Saturday, November 22nd
Race starts promptly at 8 a.m.
Registration is 7 – 7:50 a.m.

City of Sparta awarded $250,000 THDA grant

The City of Sparta has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Tennessee Housing Department Agency to give a helping hand to those who could not otherwise afford necessary housing improvements.  The grant will help families afford much-needed projects to reach code standards.  Sparta has been the recipient of this grant before, with great results.

“It really helps a lot of people in the community bring their houses up to where they’re much more liveable,” Mayor Jeff Young said.  “A lot of people can’t afford to do the things that their homes need, and this grant they can do that.”

After Thanksgiving Hike at Fall Creek Falls- Turkey Pen Spin

At 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, work off that turkey dinner with the Fall Creek Falls After Thanksgiving Hike Turkey Pen Spin.  Meet Ranger Brent at the Camper’s Check-In Station for hike to Fall Creek Falls via the Turkey Pen Ridge Trail.  This hike will be a moderate, 2.5-mile round trip walk that should last approximately 1.5-2 hours.  Hikers are encouraged to bring water and a camera.  For more information, contact Ranger Matt Brown at matthew.brown@tn.gov or Ranger Brent Measles at brent.measles@tn.gov .

Follow up Thanksgiving family festivities at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29 with Stuart Carroll for an 18-mile scenic drive and short hike to Lost Creek Waterfall.  Meet at the nature center at 9 a.m.  This 1.5-mile hike that should last approximately 3 hours.


After Thanksgiving Hike at Rock Island State Park set for Nov. 28

Join Park Ranger Allen Reynolds at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28 for a moderate 1.6-mile walk along The Downstream Trail at Rock Island State Park.  The group will be analyzing local fauna and visiting some of Rock Island’s lesser-known waterfalls.  Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and to bring water and binoculars.  The group will meet at the Twin Falls parking lot.


November named National Home Care Month

On November 17, 2014, White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson met with local home care professionals and signed a proclamation declaring November 2014 as National Home Care Month.
