Library celebrates literacy with Reading in Schools

Children’s Story Time is tomorrow

2nd Annual Superheroes Ball set for Nov. 15

From 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Tennessee Technological University Memorial Gym. the 2nd Annual Superheroes Ball will be held to benefit the American Cancer Society.  This is a mother/son date night event.  Tickets are $20 and are available at the Cookeville American Cancer Society office, Fun Factory, The Little Gym Cookeville, and Tennessee Print Masters.  A ticket includes admission to the ball, on-site activities, and food.  Children’s tickets also include a t-shirt.  T-shirts are available for adults for $10.

Three of White County’s youth football teams played in the SMTYFA championship games on Saturday at the youth football complex located down the Smithville Highway.  One came out as champions while the other two finished runner-up.

The White County pee wees won the title defeating Manchester’s Falcons 27-14.

The White County midgets were defeated by the Manchester Raiders 8-0 in a defensive battle.

It took overtime to decide the junior division game.  In fact, it took two overtime periods before the Cowan Gold Lions finished off the 32-26 win over Sparta. The score was knotted at 18 at the end of regulation.

Veterans Parade and park dedication

Sparta’s annual Veterans Day Parade is Saturday, Nov. 8. Line up begins at 9 a.m. in the White County High School parking lot. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. and travel to Liberty Square. The Sparta Rotary Club will host the dedication of the Veterans Park immediately following the parade. Please come out and show your support for White County veterans.


Creative Compassion accepting pre-qualification applications for housing

Creative Compassion, a non-profit community development organization based in Crossville, will be taking pre-qualification applications for White County residents, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at Sparta Housing Authority, 300 Cragrock Dr., in Sparta. Once approved, applicants can choose a desired lot to build on or may build on property they own. Creative Compassion is an organization dedicated to making quality housing available to low-to-moderate income individuals and families in the Upper Cumberland. Cookeville celebrates ART Prowl Nov. 7 and 8

artprowl signIt’s time for Art Prowl, noon-8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, in Cookeville.  Prowlers begin the mostly walkable, free tour at the Welcome Center, Charity’s Bake Shop, 11 N. Oak, where they pick up maps and information, purchase the new ART Prowl t-shirts and see the artwork in the Welcome Center Gallery. The route covers Historic WestSide, the Square and around town. All parking is free and ample.
