Christmas Concert and Sing-along set for Dec. 7

The Cookeville Community Folk Orchestra will present a free sing-along Christmas Concert from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 7.  at First Christian Church in Livingston.  The sing-along will feature holiday songs both old and new.


Networking event set for Dec. 3

All individuals, groups or businesses interested in the welfare of the abandoned, abused, surrendered or neglected animals in White County are invited to a networking event at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3 at Mason San Pedro Mexican Restaurant in Sparta.

Organizers hope to form a more unified approach to the prevention, promotion, rescue and care of the unwanted domestic animals in White County by aligning with the White County Animal Shelter, sharing resources, planning fundraisers and events, recruiting volunteers and meeting others with the same passion for animals.

My name is Maddox, and I’m looking for my furever home.  I’m a 2-3 year old labrador/terrier mix with a lot of luck.  I’m even named “Maddox” because it means “little fortunate one.”  Last week, the shelter got a call that there was a dog who had possibly been hit by a car and was really hurt.  When the animal control officer found me, he thought I wasn’t as bad as they thought and he brought me to the shelter.  They took me to the vet, and they helped me feel better.  The vet thinks I got in a scuffle with some coyotes or other dogs.  Now, I’m … Read More

Geneva Frances Burgess Brady, 94, of Cookeville, passed away Nov. 24, 2014, at Cedar Hills Assisted Living, in Cookeville.

Mrs. Brady was born Jan. 6, 1920, in White County, to Robert Taylor Burgess and Beatrice Randolph Burgess.

She was once a teacher at Bear Cove Elementary School, as well as a secretary for Arthur Mitchell. She, along with her late husband Ray Brady, were owners of Brady Motor Company, in Cookeville, where she served as bookkeeper. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed being with people and attending church.

White County Middle School hosts 2nd Mini-Career Fair

White County Middle School hosted its second mini-career fair of the 2014-15 school year on Nov. 21, 2014.  Approximately 300 eighth graders participated along with 10 different local manufacturers and three post-secondary institutions. The event is part of an effort to encourage career exploration at an early age. Everyone worked together to offer the students a general overview of the occupations available in the field of manufacturing along with the education and skills needed to work in these various careers.


WCMS splits with South Franklin

The White County Middle School eighth grade basketball teams hosted South Franklin Monday and came away with a split.

The Warriors improved to 6-0 with the 50-24 win while the Warriorettes fell to 2-4 after the 38-21 defeat.

Boys’ basketball team hosting steak dinner at WCHS

White County High School boys’ basketball team is having a steak dinner 4-6 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1, at the WCHS cafeteria. The cost is $25 per dinner and includes: 8-ounce rib eye steak, baked potato, salad, dessert, and a drink. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the boys’ basketball team, coach or manager. Also, tickets will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event. This dinner is prior to the game with Ooltewah.


Buddy Lee Matheney Sr.

Buddy Lee Matheney Sr., 58, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 24, 2014, at his home.

Mr. Matheney was born Jan. 1, 1956, in Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his father, George W. Matheney; sister, Gail Matheney; grandson, Josiah N. Matheney; and sisters-in-law, Etta R. Dailey and Linda F. Smartt.

Ruben Eugene Whitaker, 87, was born July 10, 1927, in White County, to John and Minnie Mae Whitaker, and passed away Nov. 22, 2014, in Crossville.

He enjoyed gardening and hiking but going to church and singing was his passion.

Mr. Whiteaker was preceded in death by his parents, John Whitaker and Minnie Mae Bennet Whitaker, and two brothers, T.D. and Jim Whitaker.
