Scams targeting residents

White County Sheriff Department has reported two recent scams have targeted White County residents, including a suspect impersonating a sheriff’s deputy to solicit money from a victim. Detective Chris Isom (pictured) describes the suspect as a large white male with sandy hair and a beard. For more information, see today’s edition of The Expositor.


Two transported in Bon Air crash

A two-vehicle crash shut down Crossville Highway at the Bon Air line. Two victims were transported after their truck flipped and traveled some distance before coming to rest in a ditch. The truck was reportedly hit by a vehicle crossing into the truck’s lane of travel, according to witnesses at the scene. Sparta-White County Rescue Squad extricated the victims from the truck.

Three vehicles are reportedly involved in a crash in the 5900 block of Crossville Highway. Rescue workers are currently responding to the scene.


BDC firefighters give back at Christmas

BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department gives to their community year round with their selfless service to preserving the life and property of their neighbors.  At Christmas, however, the department takes their volunteer work to a more personal level, as they deliver food and gifts to those in their community who would otherwise go without. TTU’s Wenclewicz hosts solo glass show

Glass artist and TTU senior Zachary Wenclewicz will host his senior show Dec. 9-14 at the Appalachian Center for Craft. The show will be in the Center for Craft’s Front Gallery, located in the front portion of the Goldenrod Sales Gallery. There will be a reception with the artist 5-7 p.m., Dec. 9. Both are free and open to the public. The Appalachian Center for Craft is approximately six miles from Interstate 40 at exit 273, Smithville/McMinnville. Go south on state Route 56 and turn left immediate after crossing Hurricane Bridge. This drive leads to the Center for Craft.


James Kevin Young

James Kevin Young, 47, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 1, 2014.

Mr. Young was born Jan. 23, 1967, in Sparta.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Sparta First Free Will Baptist Church, on Baker Street, in Sparta, at 6 p.m., Dec. 11, 2014. Lewis Carrick will officiate. There will be a period of visitation with the family prior to the service, 5-6 pm.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have fallen 5.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.50/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has fallen 6.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.69/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

White County jobless rate still falling

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development reports that White County’s unemployment rate has continued to decline.
In White County, unemployment has been dropping since July (9.5 percent), with the rates in August (9.1 percent) and September (8.0) steadily falling.  See the complete story in the Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, edition of The Expositor.


City addresses retail package liquor stores

An unexpected turn of events about the state law that determines where retail liquor stores can be located has left White County “out-in-the cold,” so to speak, when officials discovered the recently passed referendum only allows the aforementioned type of business to be located within a municipality.
