Willie Landson “Bill” Hopkins, 64 of Baxter, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 29, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Hopkins was born Feb. 27, 1950, in Sparta, to Elmo and Mary Elder Hopkins.

He retired as a supervisor at Fleetguard after 28-1/2 years of service. Mr. Hopkins has been a part of the Highland Hardware family for the last several years and in his spare time a skilled woodworker. He served his country in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Evelyn Hopkins.

Land cleared

A massive stretch of land that extends from Fred Hill Road, which sits across from White County Farmers Co-op, and extends to a viewpoint on McMinnville Highway is in the process of being cleared. According to real estate records, the property belongs to the Haston family. It is unknown at this time if there are any definite plans for the cleared acreage.


Flu or other illnesses?

The number of vehicles parked at the Walk In Clinic, on North Spring Street, is most likely an indicator of the cases of wintertime sicknesses that seemingly plague families during the holiday season, especially with the flu season in full swing.

The thermometer may indicate it’s around the freezing mark, but the serenity of the Calfkiller River flowing freely alongside the park on North Carter Street on such a chilly day brings thoughts of summertime fun that is yet to come.


Home built in 1870 undergoing renovations

This older structure on East College Street that was well known as the home of the late Dr. Billy Warren Jenkins, a well known educator in White County, appears to be undergoing renovations. According to records from the State of Tennessee Real Estate Assessment Data website, the property is now owned by Kurt M. and Laurie D. Messenger. The home, which was built in 1870, had previously been owned by James Rascoe, former White County superintendent of schools.


Garbage truck blocks Bockman traffic

A Sparta garbage truck appeared to have been broken down, as it sat in the intersection of Bockman was and Carter Street, with a tow truck in front of it. Traffic is at a dead stop. Sparta Police and Sparta Fire are on the scene.

Willie L. “Bill” Hopkins, age 64 of Baxter, formerly of Sparta, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Hopkins was born Feb. 27, 1950.
Funeral arrangements will be complete by noon, on Dec. 30.
