Water overflow

The heavy rains on Friday and today have left several pools of water adjacent to several of the roadways in the city. This pool of water is just around the corner from Payless Family Pharmacy, on West Turntable Road. Another pool only a few feet away had covered at least half of the road around 8:30 a.m., this morning.


Santa visits library

Santa Claus made a visit to White County Public Library today as part of the “Christmas in our Town” celebration.


Transformers up for Bojangles’

City of Sparta recently set transformers in preparation for the Bojangles’ restaurant that will be locating on the property near Roosevelt Drive and Highway 111.


Five Warriors earn All District football honors

The football coaches of District 6AAA got together at the conclusion of the 2014 season and voted on postseason honors.

The All District 6AAA team was not officially released until all teams from the league had completed their seasons. Rhea County advanced all the way to the state semifinals where they were eliminated on November 28th by West. The coaches have now released their glitter squad.

White County High School had five players earn honors from the league coaches. Jake Shockey, a sophomore running back/linebacker, and Seth Davis, a senior fullback/linebacker, were named to the first team.

Franklin Delano Grooms

Franklin Delano Grooms, 73, of Granite Falls, North Carolina, passed away Dec. 3, 2014 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir.

Mr. Grooms was born April 1, 1941, in Davidson County, Tennessee, to Audrian and Lula Mae Graham Grooms. .

Mr. Grooms was a retired plant manager and attended Waterlife Church. He was very active in United Way. He started the Optimist Club and started Babe Ruth Baseball in his hometown of Sparta, Tennessee. He was once chairman of the Pitt County, North Carolina Board of Education. At the age of 21, he was president of the Chamber of Commerce in Sparta.

Gary Guhse

Gary Guhse, 64, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 5, 2014, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Warriors roll past Rhea County

The WCHS girls hold off Rhea County for the 45-41 win in the 6AAA opener fur both teams.

Doyle Christmas Parade set for Dec. 13

Doyle Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sat., Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. Line up begins at 9 at Doyle Community Center. Must be in line no later than 9:45 to be eligible to be in the float contest. Prizes are: 1st place $100, 2nd $75 and 3rd $50. Immediately after the parade Santa will be at Doyle City Hall giving fruit bags to children. Also, Doyle City house Christmas light contest will be held on Dec. 13. Houses will be judged at dark on Dec. 13. Prizes are the same as the float contest.


Three firefighters hired at Sparta Fire Department

Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the hiring of three firefighters to fill in temporarily, as needed, through the holiday season. Those hired were William England, Kevin Jolly and Edward Hensley.
