Problem located at WCHS

Firefighters have reportedly located the source of the problem causing the smoke alarms to sound. Firefighters on the scene have downgraded the situation to “non-emergency.” No further information has been released at this time.

WCHS evacuated for smoke alarm

Sparta firefighters are currently responding to a smoke alarm at White County High School. Firefighters are inside the building, and students have reportedly been evacuated while firefighters investigate.

Truck restrictions in place in Blount County

Following the completion of an operational and safety review, the Tennessee Department of Transportation has determined that vehicles over 30 feet in length will no longer be allowed to utilize a mountainous section of US 129 (SR 115) in Blount County, known as “The Dragon.” For more information on the new restrictions, see TDOT.


White County bands together to rebuild its beloved bookstore

In the week since a raging fire on Bockman Way on Nov. 25 destroyed a building that housed two local businesses, including a bright little locally owned bookstore, White County residents have refused to let their bookstore die.

Riverbank Books was a dream realized by owner Tonya Carter, who, after selling books online for several years, opened the business on Bockman Way nearly three years ago.

White County residents only. No professional photographers. Photo must have been taken within the past 16 months. No Polaroids accepted. Photo must be no smaller than 4×6 inches; no larger than 8×10 inches. One entry per category. Photo must be labeled with category, photographer’s name, address and phone number. Deadline for entries is noon, Feb. 6, 2015. Photos may be e-mailed to photos@spartalive.com or brought to The Expositor, 34 W. Bockman Way, Sparta and must be picked up after March 3, 2015 and prior to March 17, 2015. Expositor employees and families are not eligible to enter.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released the surveillance report of the 2014-2015 influenza season for week 47 (ending Nov. 22, 2014). The CDC follows the data both nationally and regionally.
