Sylvia Gail Reece Ross

Sylvia Gail Reece Ross, 57, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 27, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Ms. Ross was born Oct. 26, 1957, in Putnam County, to Jean Hedgecough Reece and Thomas Reece.

She was a longtime employee of Federal Mogul and was a member of Bethlehem Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Greg Reece.

Survivors include her daughter, Jamie Ross; son, Shane Dilldine; grandchildren, Dayston Reece Bradley, Dawson Bradley, Celisity Bradley; mother Jean Reece; brother, Paul Reece; sister, Cyndi Burchfield and husband Eric; and in life, a sister, Gwenda Broom.

Daughters of Confederacy meeting

WCHS teams earn spots in the finals

The White County High School basketball teams took different paths, but both find themselves in the championship game of the Sonic Shootout on Tuesday.

The Warriorettes jumped out to an early lead and never trailed against Heritage on their way to the 61-42 win.

For the Warriors, things were a little more difficult.  It took two overtimes for them to overcome Glencliff for the 93-90 win.

The Warriorettes will take on Clarkrange, a 67-32 winner over Lebanon, in the girls’ title game.

The Warriors will face off against MBA, who also had to come from behind to take a 62-61 win over Lebanon in their semifinal match-up.

Five-vehicle crash on Bon Air shuts down Crossville Highway

Emergency workers are currently responding to a five-vehicle crash around the 5500 block of Crossville Highway on Bon Air Mountain. While no one is reportedly suffering from severe injuries, visibility on the mountain has made it difficult to see and the Rescue Squad has been dispatched to bring lights. Crossville Highway is shut down at this time while emergency workers clear the scene.


Elks Lodge hamburger dinner

Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have fallen 9.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.13/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has fallen 9.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.


Clifford “Cliff” Craig

Clifford “Cliff” Craig, age 64, passed away Dec. 27, 2014, at his home in Doyle.

Mr. Craig was born Sept. 21, 1950, in the Doyle, to Howard Washington Craig and Iva Geraldine Brock Craig.

Some of Cliff’s enjoyments in life were carpentry, fishing, arrowhead hunting, walking in the mountains and his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Lee Craig.

Both the WCHS teams rolled on  opening day of the Sonic Shootout.

The Warriors defeated Sequoyah 91-64 while the Warriorettes dominated Franklin County 84-64.


Shirley Cathleen Elrod Allen

Shirley Cathleen Elrod Allen, 59, of the Old Zion community of White County, passed away Dec. 25, 2014, at her home.

Ms. Allen was born April 27, 1955, in Muncie, Indiana, the daughter of Charlie Clelon and Geneva Rosell Nash Elrod.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, James Rodney Elrod.

Survivors include her son, Donnie Ray Allen Jr.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Geraldine and John Pollard, of Sparta, Diana and Billy Masters, of Shorewood, Illinois; brother and sister-in-law, Carl “Buddy” and Judy Elrod, of Sparta; three nieces; five nephews; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

Etna Harris Haston

Etna Harris Haston, 92, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 24, 2014.

She was the daughter of Cauley E. and Este Taylor Harris, of Adel, Georgia, and wife of the late J. D. Haston.

She resided at Life Care Center of Sparta and passed away after a brief illness.

She was a devoted, loving wife and mother and true friend to many. She led her life with love, grace and dignity. She was a long-time member of Sparta First United Methodist Church and volunteer for many community and civic activities to better her community.

Frances Lucille “Granny” Hembree

Frances Lucille “Granny” Hembree, 96, of Quebeck, passed away Dec. 26, 2014, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Hembree was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Warren County, She was the daughter of Luther Roberts Sr. and Hester Hitchcock Roberts.

She was a member of Quebeck Church of Christ.

Mrs. Hembree was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Simpson Hembree; four brothers, Herbert, Pascal, Luther Jr., C.L. Roberts; and son-in-law, Richard Roberts.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann Roberts, of Quebeck; two grandchildren, Mike Roberts, Michelle (R.C.) Christian; five great-grandchildren, Matt and Ethan Roberts, Shelby, Hannah and Mallory Christian.

Joseph “Joe” Franklin Crawford

Joseph “Joe” F. Crawford, 93, went to be with his Heavenly Father, on Dec. 25, 2014. He departed this life at his home in Sparta.Mr. Crawford was born Jan. 4, 1921, in the Eastland community of White County, to Albert Barton Crawford and Josie Rebecca Scott Crawford.

He was married to Myrtle Ruth Marlow Crawford for 57 years who preceded him in death.

Mr. Crawford was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 14, 1942 until Dec. 11, 1945. He served in the 527th Ordnance, attached to the 1st Provisional Tank Group-Chinese/American (the first Chinese tank group ever organized) in the China
