Doris Worthey Cyr Sanders

Doris Worthey Cyr Sanders, 86, of Sparta, and a native of Chattanooga, passed away Dec. 26, 2014, at Vanderbilt University Hospital following a short illness.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Chattanooga and graduated from Chattanooga High School, in 1945. After graduating from high school at age 17, she moved to Washington D.C., to work at the Navy Department, Bureau of Ships, where she met her husband, Don. They married, in 1947, and moved first to Cleveland, Ohio, and then back to Chattanooga, in 1950. She worked at the Trane Company more than 15 years and retired from TVA where she worked more than 14 years.

Firefighters battle chimney fire on West Everett

Firefighters from Sparta Fire Department, along with Sparta Police Department and White County Emergency Medical Services, responded to a fire at a residence located on West Everett Street at approximately 10:42 a.m. The fire was located around the wood burning stove and chimney in the main living area of the home. Everyone was safely out of the residence.


Eastland breakfast

Eastland Volunteer Fire Department will host a breakfast, 6-10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at fire station #1, 221 Eastland Cemetery Rd. The meal will include scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, potatoes, gravy and biscuits (pancakes on request). The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Gayewon Dural Vance

Gayewon Dural Vance, 70, of Doyle, passed away Dec. 23, 2014, at Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville.

Mr. Vance was born Feb. 14, 1944, in White County, to Carl Vance and Willene Measles Vance.

He served in the U.S. Army and was the retired produce manager at Kroger.

Mr. Vance was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Slatton Vance, of Doyle; three brothers, Gayle Wayne Vance and wife Wanda, of Doyle, Bill Vance, of Spencer, Howard Lee Vance and wife Sandra, of Doyle; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Annette Slatton, of Doyle; and several nieces and nephews.

Bouldin qualifies for the fall 2014 Dean’s List

Lauryn Bouldin, of Sparta, has qualified for the fall 2014 Dean’s List at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C. Approximately 30 percent of Belmont’s 7,300 students qualified for the Fall 2014 Dean’s List.


Wendell and Tanya Rust celebrate 15 years of marriage

Wendell Rust has a special anniversary message for his wife Tanya on their 15 year wedding anniversary. “Happy anniversary to my beautiful wife of 15 years,” he says.


Blue Springs Road closed

According to E-911, Blue Springs Road is closed just below Sugar Camp Road because of the rain washing out the road. There’s been no information so far on when the road will reopen.

State sales tax collections increase, local falls

White County has experienced an increase in one area of sales tax collections while another category has decreased by more than $3,000. According to Tennessee Department of Revenue, state sales tax collections, in November 2014, for White County were listed at $1,033,415, which was in increase from October’s numbers of $1,027,305. Local tax collections for November were $290,728, down more than $3,600 from October’s figure of $294,384. For the complete story check out the Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, edition of The Expositor.

Crash closes Spring Street

A reported traffic crash has closed both lanes of Spring Street while emergency personnel clear the scene. Sparta Police, White County Emergency Medical Services and Sparta Fire Department were on the scene.


Nakia Juan Irwin

Nakia Juan Irwin, 40, of Algood passed away Dec. 17, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Irwin was born May 22, 1974, in Cookeville, to James Irwin and Jacqueline Roberts Shockley.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Chad Harp, of Algood; children, Akira Irwin, Aikan Harp, Akadian Harp, all of Algood; mother, Jackie Shockley and stepfather Eddie, of Sparta; sister, Dana Sexton and husband Ryan, of McMinnville; brothers, Eddie Shockley, Jim Wester, both of Cookeville; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mt. Gilead VFD gives back for the holidays

Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a child in their community to spread the joy of Christmas. The department chose Alex Williams and gave him gifts and clothes before surprising him with a brand new bicycle.
