William Abbott recognized for brave and selfless acts

At the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and White County Firefighters Association awards banquet on Jan. 10, Lieutenant Derek Wilson, of North End Volunteer Fire Department, presented an award to William Abbott, a concerned citizen who “selflessly placed his personal safety and property in jeopardy to protect the lives and property of his fellow citizens” during a fire on Nov. 15. Also in attendance at the Rescue Squad banquet on Jan. 10 were BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department, Central View Volunteer Fire Department, Cassville Volunteer Fire Depatment, North End Volunteer Fire Department, Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Eastland Volunteer Fire Department. White County E-911 was also present. All present members of these departments came together for a photo after the awards ceremony.

On Jan. 10, the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad held their 4th Annual Awards and Special Recognition Banquet. After their awards ceremony, the squad gathered together the present members for a photo.


Ray Brymer Jr.

Ray Brymer Jr., 69, of McMinnville and a Van Buren County native, passed away Jan. 10, 2015, at Erlanger Medical Center, in Chattanooga, following a sudden illness.

Mr. Brymer was born Aug. 9, 1945, the son of William Ray and Maggie Lene Brymer.

He was a retired guidance counselor with Taft Youth Center and a member of the Baptist Church,

Mr. Brymer was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alene Brymer.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Brymer, of McMinnville; a son, Phillip Ray (Juanita) Brymer, of Barrow, Alaska; two granddaughters, Megan Lynnae Brymer, Kristen Annette Brymer, both of Spencer; stepson, Nathan (Candice) Jones, of McMinnville; … Read More

4-H Chick Chain Project

UT Extension 4-H will be taking orders for our 4-H Chick Chain Project up through Friday, Jan. 16, 2015.   This project teaches 4-H’ers the responsibilities of taking care of their chicks and how to start a small business of their own by selling farm fresh eggs. UCHRA commodities distribution

Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency will hold a commodities distribution for White County, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Wednesday January 21, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the White County Ag Building of the Fairgrounds, 565 Hale Street, Sparta. Everyone must present a valid UCHRA commodity card in order to receive commodities.

 


Friends of White County Animals PAWSITIVE AWARD

Friends of White County Animals recognizes businesses and organizations that provide extraordinary service to animals by presenting the PAWSITIVE AWARD. Dr. Denton Colwell, Sparta Veterinary Services, is the first recipient. He received this award because of his extraordinary caring professional service to animals in need. Dr. Colwell has also been a sponsor for FWCA public events and provided information to help people take care of their pets.

 


Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have fallen 7.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.96/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.12/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. The national average has decreased 48.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 118.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.
