Turrington Road fire believed to have been caused by wood burning stove

Thomas Steele, Secretary of BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department, has stated that fire in the outbuilding on Turrington Road is believed to have been caused by a failure in the vent pipe or chimney of a wood burning stove. The building was brand new, he says. Steele states that he hopes that residents will remember, “the importance of having a professional clean, install and inspect any flue or vent pipe.”


White County firefighters battle garage fire on Turrington Road

At approximately 9 p.m. last night, firefighters from across the county responded to a reported structure fire that appears to have been a garage. In a statement from BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department, they state, “Members of the BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Dept were fortune have assistance from Doyle, Central View, Sparta, Cassville, Cherry Creek, North End, Hickory Valley, and Eastland Fire departments as well as the White County Sheriff Department and EMS for a building fire on Turrington Road tonight. Phyllis Joan Kinniard, 70, of Sparta, passed away this morning at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Watch out for hypothermia

Hypothermia occurs when the body gets cold and loses heat faster than the body can make it. A rectal temperature is considered the most accurate body temperature. A normal rectal body temperature ranges from 97.5 °F (36.4 °C) to 99.6 °F (37.6 °C), and for most people it is 98.6 °F (37 °C).  Remember these tips to help prevent hypothermia:

•Dress in layers

•Wrap up well when going outside in the cold.

• Avoid breezes and drafts indoors.

•Eat nutritious food and wear warm clothes to ward off winter chill.

•Wear a warm hat.

•Eat hot foods and drink warm drinks several

Warriorettes ranked 8th

The inaugural Associated Press poll for the Top Ten basketball teams in the state of Tennessee was released late Monday.

The Warriorettes earned a #8 ranking in the Class 3A girls’ poll.  It is their first ranking in the Top Ten since 1998.  See Thursday’s paper for more details.


Doris Jean England Walker

Doris Jean England Walker, 73, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 6, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Walker was born March 26, 1941, in Sparta, Tennessee, to Paul and Lorene Vinson England.

She was a Beltone hearing aid dealer for 35 years and a member of Sparta First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years Kenneth “Monk” Walker, of Sparta; two daughters, Penny (Sam) Copeland, Cindy Lafever, all of Sparta; grandchildren, Martha Cayce, Meghan Davis, Ashley Chavez, Allison Lafever; great-grandchildren, Asher Davis, Poppy Davis; sister, Shirley Kerkvliet; two brothers, Harold England, Kenny England; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Hyder; nephew, Greg Greene; and niece, Kerrianne England.

Hubbard Lee “Dick” Ray Jr.

Hubbard Lee “Dick” Ray Jr., 76, passed from this life on Jan. 6, 2015, at The Webb House, in Smithville.

Mr. Ray was born July 16, 1938.

He lived the last 24 years of his life at The Webb House, in Smithville, Tennessee, under the loving care of Alan and Lori Webb. Mr. Ray was family to Alan and Lori, their children, Jill Watson and many people at The Webb House who cared for him during his life there. The Webb House was home to Mr. Ray where he affectionately was given the title of mayor.
