ETSU bestows nearly 1,400 degrees at fall commencement

East Tennessee State University conferred nearly 1,400 degrees in two fall commencement ceremonies. There were no graduates from White County or Van Buren County. However, listed below are the graduates from bordering counties.

Richard E. Passno

Richard E. Passno, 59, of Sparta, passed from this life at his home on March 6, 2015.

Mr. Passono was born on April 6, 1955, in Plattsburgh, New York.

The family has chosen cremation with burial to follow at a later date in Union Cemetery, located in Morrisonville, New York.

Final Care Cremation Services of Sparta is in charge of arrangements.

 (NASHVILLE, TN), March 9, 2015 — A resolution aimed at ending federal “regulation without representation” is headed to the floor of the Tennessee Senate after being approved by the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee this past week. Senate Joint Resolution 2 calls upon Congress to require that, whenever one quarter of the members of the U.S. House or the U.S. Senate transmit to the President their written declaration of opposition to a proposed federal regulation; a majority vote of the House and Senate is necessary to adopt it.

Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 3.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.22/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.46/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Tennessee during the past week, prices yesterday were 98.2 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 20.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.


Tri State Distribution assigned patent

Tri State Distribution, Sparta, Tennessee, has been assigned a patent (D,722,689) developed by two co-inventors for “[s]egmented threads for a pharmaceutical cap.” The co-inventors are Joseph A. Miceli, Spencer, Tennessee, and David A. Miceli, Reno, Nevada.


Ticket information for state tournament

The Warriors (30-3), after a 16-year absence in the state, will tip off the BlueCross Boys Basketball Championshios, which is played at Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.  They play at 10 a.m. Wednesday against Brentwood (28-6).

The Eagles (19-15) are making their first-ever appearance in the TSSAA State Tournament by any Van Buren County High School basketball team.  They will tip off the action on Thursday at 10 a.m. against Loretto (23-6).

All tickets are general admission.  They are $10 each day Wednesday through Friday.  On Saturday’s championship day, tickets are still general admission, but they are $12.

13th Judicial District launches first Veterans Treatment Court

The 13th Judicial District Recovery Courts is pleased to announce that beginning on April 1, 2015, it will expand its overall programming where current and former military service members who are involved in the criminal justice system will have a new option emphasizing treatment, rehabilitation, and solutions for military service-related needs. The expansion will offer both outpatient and residential treatment. John Leslie Greene

John Leslie Green, 74, of Sparta, passed away March 3, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Green was born Oct. 12, 1940, the son of Shirley Green and Mary Harris Green.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bobby Green, Shirley Green Jr.; and one sister, Arzie Willeene Green.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles Green, of Sparta, Lloyd Green, of Indiana; sister, Gladys Green, of Sparta; two aunts, Bertye Lee Yates, of Doyle, Misty McDonald, of Doyle; and several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Senior citizens to benefit from canned food drive

Are you aware that Tennessee ranks 2nd in the nation for senior hunger? You can help, one can at a time. March is National Nutrition Month, and Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging and Disability, is making an effort to help alleviate hunger for low income seniors in White County by coordinating a Canned Food Drive. The Canned Food Drive will help support seniors in your area, many who are isolated and homebound. Donation boxes are located at Save-A-Lot, 179 Mose Drive, in Sparta. The Canned Food Drive continues until March 27, 2015. For additional information call (931) 476-4119.


“Barefoot Farmer” featured at U.C. Home and Garden Show

Jeff Poppen, also known as the Barefoot Farmer, will present a “Backyard Gardening” seminar at the Upper Cumberland Home and Garden Show, 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 15, at Hyder-Burks Pavilion, in Cookeville. Poppen is the owner and operator of one of the oldest and largest organic farms in Tennessee.  For the past 15 years, he has appeared on the Nashville PBS’ television program Volunteer Gardener. Sierra Club addresses proposed development on wetlands in Cookeville

sierra-club-logoDevelopers have applied for an Aquatic Resource Alteration Permit to that would affect a three-acre Exceptional Tennessee Waters wetland in Cookeville (Interstate Drive and Walnut Avenue – behind Cheddar’s) for a retail development. Come learn about the current details and the application process to affect waters of the state and/or US and where and how the public effectively intersects with it. The meeting will be Monday, March 9, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cookeville meeting room, 31 West First Street, Cookeville.
