Henry Wayne Kirby, 65, of Sparta, passed away March 21, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Kirby was born June 24, 1949, to Bobbie Kirby and Frances Carter Kirby.

He received an associate degree from Fayettville Tech, in North Carolina. He was a retired supervisor from Flowserve Corporation, in Cookeville.

Mr. Kirby was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Kirby.

Survivors include his son and daughter and their spouses, Eric and Machelle Cherry, of Cookeville, Tracy and Bill Behm, of Newnan, Georgia, and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m., March 28, 2015, at Long Cemetery, in Spencer.

Daughters of Confederacy attend district meeting

Unsecured load on tractor trailer poses safety hazard

Law enforcement officers are currently tracking down a tractor trailer on Highway 111 South that has been reported to have an inadequately secured load that may pose a safety hazard to other motorists. According to a call to E-911, there is only one strap securing the load to the truck. Sparta Police, White County Sheriff Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol are looking for the vehicle, which was last reported to be near Walmart.


Central View gets new lockers

Lockers were recently purchased for the 4th and 5th graders to help prepare them for White County Middle School.  The lockers were partially funded through Box Tops for Education Program and Caney Fork Electric, Central View’s Partner in Education.

Package liquor store ordinance discussed

A special work session was held after the March 19 meeting of the Board of Mayor and Alderman to discuss an ordinance to be put in place for package liquor stores in Sparta. A permit for special concessions including beer and alcohol was also discussed.

Myrtle Ann Green Richardson Hammock

Myrtle Ann Green Richardson Hammock, 88, of Sparta, passed away March 21, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Hammock was born March 29, 1926, in McMinnville, to William Sylvester Green and Ova Doney Green.

She was a retired shirt factory worker and nurses’ aid.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Woodrow Richardson, Junior Hammock; sisters, Betty Faye Day, Artensy Green; brothers Fred, Ed and Sylvester Green; and son-in-law, Paul Vandagriff.

She is survived by four daughters, Joyce Vandagriff, Sandra (Douglas) Savage, Felecia “Lisa” (Rick) Sims, Mechelle Hammock Henry (Eddie) Nelson; grandchildren, Ronnie (Amanda) Vincion, Tracey Meeks, Jason Vandagriff, Barry (Shannon) Vandagriff, Dwight … CONTINUED

Bragg charged with arson and assault

A Sparta woman has been arrested after officers say she assaulted someone and set a bed on fire. Officers allege that Jennifer Lynn Bragg, age 41 of Sparta, assaulted someone in the home after a verbal dispute. The victim then reportedly went into the restroom and Bragg attempted to get into the restroom after him. The victim called 911 and while he was on the phone with 911, Bragg reportedly left the home. According to Isom, when the victim came out of the restroom, the bed was on fire. For more information on the arrest, see today’s edition of The Expositor.
