Crash on 111 shuts down one lane of traffic

A traffic crash on Highway 111, south of Woodland Park Elementary School, shut down one lane of travel in the southbound lanes while emergency crews cleared the scene. The crash involved a Volvo car and a John Deere tractor. Tennessee Highway Patrol, White County Sheriff Department, White County EMS, Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene.

National Infant Immunization Week, April 18-25

National Infant Immunization Week is an annual observance to promote the benefits of immunizations and to improve the health of children two years old or younger. Since 1994, local and state health departments, national immunization partners, healthcare professionals, community leaders from across the United States, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  have worked together through NIIW to highlight the positive impact of vaccination on the lives of infants and children, and to call attention to immunization achievements.


Gas prices update

April 20- Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 10.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.23/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 6.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.45/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.  The national average has increased 2.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 121.5 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Sparta First Free Will Baptist revival

Sparta First Free Will Baptist Church is having a spring revival. Bro. Richard Harris will speak at 7 p.m., April 20 and 21. Bro. Dennis Dewessee will be preaching at 7 p.m., April 22. Special singing at each service. Everyone is invited to come.


Lurla Mae Ledford Cole

Lurla Mae Ledford Cole, 93, of Sparta, passed away April 17 2015, at the NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Cole was born May 26,1921, in White County, to Lige Ledford and Verdi Lee Presley Ledford.

She was a retired factory worker from Mallory and was a former shirt factory worker.

Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Henry Cole; children, Mary Wilson, Jeanette Humphrey, James Thomas Cole; brother, John D. Ledford; and sisters, Dora Clemons, Betty Prater and Bonnie Cunningham.

Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands Joyce and Bob Vinson, Rendy and Dennis Howard all of Sparta;

Civil Air Patrol wraps up relief work in White, other counties

Civil Air Patrol’s Tennessee Wing announced April 17 it has wrapped up its relief work as part of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s response to the severe ice storms that struck the state. The U.S. Air Force’s volunteer civilian auxiliary’s involvement in Operation Valentine Freeze, the name TEMA assigned to the multi-agency response to the severe weather, included 1,000 volunteer hours during the equivalent of more than 150 volunteer days. Crews removed debris in White, Cumberland, Overton, Morgan, Putnam and Fentress counties. Members also transported critical supplies during hazardous conditions and flew reconnaissance flights over affected areas.


Softball and baseball suffer one-run losses

It was a tough Saturday for both the Warriorette softball and Warrior baseball teams of White County High School.

The Warriorettes hosted Warren County in a District 6AAA contest and were defeated 6-5.

The Warriors were defeated 5-4 in Mt. Juliet by the Bears.

The Warriors have a two-game series with District 6AAA foe, Rhea County to start the week.  The Warriors travel there on Monday and the Eagles come to Sparta Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.  The Warriorette softball team hosts Cookeville Tuesday at 5 p.m.
