White County’s Higgins wins URECA award at TTU

Amanda Higgins, a senior human ecology major from Sparta, received a URECA award at Tennessee Tech University’s 10th annual Student Research Day. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity program provides monetary assistance for undergraduates who pursue research and creative activities at TTU. Award recipients will receive financial support for their research initiatives in the form of a mini-grant. Higgins’ research is titled “Establishment of Lactation Rooms on Tennessee Technological University Campus.” More than 170 Tennessee Tech University students presented the results of their semester work. Over 60 URECA awards were granted; about 30 awards were given for poster presentations.

Fundraisers scheduled for Ratliff family

Over the next couple of weeks, there are two local fundraising events planned to help with expenses for WCHS student athlete, Abby Ratliff.

Ratliff, a sophomore who is a member of the Warriorette soccer, basketball and track and field teams, was injured in a sledding accident on Thursday, March 5th. In addition to several broken bones, Ratliff suffered a head trauma and has been in a coma since the accident. She remained at Erlanger for three weeks and was moved to the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital in Atlanta.

Baseball splits with Cumberland County

The Warrior baseball team split their series with Cumberland County to start the week.  They lost to the Jets 11-2 in Crossville, but picked up the 2-0 win in Sparta on Tuesday.

The WCHS softball team split with the two Crossville high schools.  They defeated Cumberland County Friday by a score of 7-5 and then fell 17-14 to Stone Memorial on Monday.

District 6AAA tournament play gets underway for all spring teams this weekend.  Check back for complete details.

Fire on Dew Road extinguished

White County E-911 just dispatched fire departments and a sheriff department unit to a garage fire on Dew Road.

Rotary Club donates to Head Start

The Sparta Rotary Club’s annual donation of $1,000 to Head Start teachers is greatly appreciated. Federal Mogul donates to B.A.M.

Federal Mogul Human Resource Manager Gary Hall gives a donation of $1,000 to Joan Belanger for the Backpack Assist Ministry event, which will be Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015. The employees of Federal Mogul held a yard sale on April 18, and the concession proceeds were donated to B.A.M. These funds will help buy school supplies and personal hygiene items for the students in White and Van Buren counties.

Technical graduates ready for skilled jobs

Three White County residents, including two practical nurses, were among the 45 graduates from nine counties recognized during spring trimester ceremonies at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology – McMinnville. Freddie Roberts and Betsy Sheffey received their nursing pins and diplomas. The industrial maintenance class included Dustin Brock.

“Run For Your Mama” kicks off race series on May 9

On Saturday, May 9, WCTE’s Run For Your Mama Double Pump 5K kicks off the Run the Cumberland race series. The 7 a.m. 5K Road Race kicks off at Dogwood Park, and the 10 a.m. 5K Trail Run takes place at Cookeville High School’s cross country trail. Runners will have the opportunity to win great prizes, including an iPad Mini and an iPod Touch. Top runners will receive monetary prizes, and special awards will be awarded to participating ‘Mamas.’ Children ages 10 and under can register for just $10.
