National Day of Prayer

Be a part of a prayer chain linking everyone together to pray for America. The gathering will be noon, Thursday, May 7, 2015, at White County Courthouse. Everyone is invited to gather and join hands to circle the courthouse and lift up prayers for America. In case of rain, the event will be in the upstairs of the courthouse. Everyone is asked to come and be a part of this prayer chain.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Macedonia Baptist celebrates 200 years

Macedonia The Baptist Church will be celebrating its 200th anniversary at 6 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015, There will be food, fun and fellowship, but most of all there will be a sharing of the gospel through music. Featured groups will be “Walking by Faith” and “Midnight Cry.” No admission charge. The church is at 1435 S. Bunker Hill Rd., in Sparta. Everyone is invited.

Phillis D. Hipsher

Phillis Dawn Hipsher, 56, of Nashville, passed away May 4, 2015, at Alive Hospice, in Madison, after a short illness.

Ms. Hipsher graduated from White County High School, in Sparta, and spent most of her working career as a 911 dispatcher for Metro Nashville Police Department from which she retired.

She was preceded in death by grandson, Devin Clendenning, and parents the Rev. Howell and Martha Hipsher, who had resided in Sparta where Martha taught school for many years.

Five Wishes at the library

There will be a presentation of “Five Wishes” at the White County Public Library today, May 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. Everyone who attends will receive a free copy of “Five Wishes.” There will be additional copies available at the cost of $1.

Clarence Wayne Clouse

Clarence Wayne Clouse, 82, of Sparta, passed from this life May 6, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Clouse was born May 1, 1933, in Sparta, the son of Clarence Clouse and Veda McCulley Clouse.

He worked 25 years for General Motors, in Muncie, Indiana.

Mr. Clouse was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, J.B. Clouse, Richard Clouse, Ed Clouse; and sisters, Nina Junkins, Ina Loftis, Martha Fitzgerald, Barbara Spicer and Janice Ferrell.

Ravenscroft to be considered for National Register of Historic Places

Jeff Brymer, 52, of Sparta, passed away May 6, 2015, at Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., May 7, 2015, at Spencer Church of God. Funeral service will be 1 p.m., May 8, at the church, with burial in Sodom Cemetery, in Van Buren County.

A complete obituary will soon be available.

Grief support class

Congratulations to the 2015 American Legion Boys State delegates. They will be attending the week long program from May 24-30 at Tennessee Tech University. Boys State is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Participants learn the duties and responsibilities of city, county and state governments. American Legion Post #99 would like to thank the Knights of Pythis, State Farm, Robert Verble, Cheek Insurance Agency, Turney Financial, Ray Anderson, Ben Lomand Connect, Bill Boruff Automotive, and the Sparta Rotary Club for sponsoring these students.

Grants available for spay and neuter programs

Tennessee Department of Health is accepting applications for the 2015 Animal Friendly Spay/Neuter Grant program. Grants provided through this initiative support low-cost spay and neuter programs for dogs and cats in Tennessee and are funded through sales of Animal Friendly license plates. To be eligible for funding, applicants must offer sterilization services provided by a veterinarian licensed in Tennessee and performed in a facility permitted by the Department of Health. Animals for which procedures are provided must be owned or adopted by individuals living in Tennessee. Applications must be submitted by 2 p.m. Central time May 12, 2015. Johnnie Hugh Allen

Johnnie Hugh Allen, 70, of Sparta, passed away May 2, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center after a short battle with cancer.

Mr. Allen was born Nov. 13, 1944, at the Peter Cave, in Jackson County, the son of Hickman Allen and Alice Haney Allen.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Haney. They were married Feb. 18, 1966 and enjoyed 49 great years together

Mr. Allen is also survived by two wonderful sons, Charlie Clay Allen and wife Dianne Sweatt Allen, and Wyatt Hugh Allen and his wife Sherry Allen.

Mr. Allen chose cremation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
