Classic Country Band entertains at NHC for Mothers’ Day event

Despite serious health issues that left Larry “Bubba” Johnson in a coma and fighting for his life after colon cancer surgery, in December 2014, the well loved musician and friend to all who know him insisted he would still conduct his annual Mothers’ Day concert at NHC Healthcare Center of Sparta, on Saturday, May 9. Johnson introduced Ms. Ruth, 92, who sang a gospel song for the crowd.

Despite serious health issues that left Larry “Bubba” Johnson in a coma and fighting for his life after colon cancer surgery, in December 2014, the well loved musician and friend to all who know him insisted he would still conduct his annual Mothers’ Day concert at NHC Healthcare Center of Sparta, on Saturday, May 9. Johnson, who was just recently released from NHC after a lengthy stay, rallied enough strength to entertain the crowd. And let us say that he was at the “top of his game” as he performed several vocal arrangements with the Classic Country Band.


Class of 1962 “Picnic in the Park”

White County High School Class of 1962 will have its “Picnic in the Park,” 4-8 p.m., Monday, May 18, 2015, at South Carter Street Park, by the river. Bring a covered dish or whatever is easy, and come on down. Spouses, dates and friends from other classes are welcome.


May is Motorcycle Awareness Month

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges drivers to share the road this season. As the weather is warming up, more motorcycles will be on the road. Drivers should be on the look out for motorcycles and double check each blind spot. Motorcyclists are also urged to make themselves visible to other drivers by wearing bright, reflective clothing and helmets as well as having easily visible taillights and brake lights.


Swipe through more than 90,000 jobs with new app

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips is announcing a new iPhone and Android mobile app that makes finding available Tennessee jobs even easier. The new app’s functionality will allow users to access the entire Jobs4TN Online Services database on an iPhone or Android device, search for a job based on current location using the unique “Jobs Nearby” function, and pinpoint jobs on a map for easy reference. The app does require iOS 6.0 or later. Employers and jobseekers can download the “Jobs4TN” app at the Apple Store or Google Play at no charge.


CRMC urologist to discuss erectile dysfunction at free seminar

Quinton Cancel, M.D., of Upper Cumberland Urology, will be presenting a free men’s health seminar about erectile dysfunction, commonly referred to as ED, at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 14, in the Cookeville Regional Medical Center Education Center. Dr. Cancel will discuss the causes of erectile dysfunction as well as explain a number of treatment options that are available. The seminar is free, but seating is limited. TDOT road construction updates-White County

WHITE COUNTY, SR-111 (Spencer Hwy.) repair of bridge over Calfkiller River (LM 6.37) in Sparta: Work on this project continues. The contractor may have short term lane closures to perform various operations on an as-needed basis. Flaggers will assist with traffic control as necessary. Project completion date is June 2015. TDOT road construction updates-Van Buren County

VAN BUREN COUNTY, SR-111 grading, drainage, and paving from south of Manus Road to south of SR-285 near Double Bridge Road: Work on this project continues. Utilities are currently being installed. Grading and blasting operations continue and the contractor is addressing the slope with removal of unsuitable material and installing graded solid rock within the construction zone. Motorists should expect periodic delays. Flaggers will be present during progression of work. Motorists should use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles within the work zone. PUTNAM COUNTY, SR-84 slide mitigation at LM 10.5 and LM 11.0, including grading drainage and paving: Work on this project continues. SR-84 is now closed to through traffic in this area because a section of the roadway has begun settling. In the interest of public safety, the roadway will remain closed until it is determined that it is safe to reopen. This closure will be in effect for four to six weeks. Detour routes are marked. DeKALB COUNTY, SR-26 (U.S. 70) construction of a welded steel plate girder bridge and three retaining walls over the Caney Fork River and Sligo Road (LM 24.58): This bridge replacement project continues. During construction, the current bridge over the river will remain open to traffic until the new structure is constructed and able to carry traffic. The contractor may have short lane closures to perform various operations on an as-needed basis. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Carl Steven Cannon

FLAGCarl Steven Cannon, 65, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, formerly of Sparta, passed away May 7, 2015.

Mr. Cannon was born Dec. 6, 1949, in Sparta, the son of Carl Cannon and Jennie Roberts Cannon.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany, and was one of the first drafted from Sparta, in 1970.

Mr. Cannon was preceded in death by his father, Carl Cannon, and two brothers, Russell Cannon and Hershel Cannon.
