District 6AAA tournament update

The White County High School spring sports teams were busy with District 6AAA tournament action over the weekend.

WCHS will have three participants in the semifinals of the tennis tournament.  Those are Cole Crosland (singles), Megan Holland (singles) and Mitchell Lamb/Dylan Summers (doubles).  They will all play Monday at Rhea County.

The Warrior baseball team advanced to the semifinals with a 7-0 win over Cumberland County on Saturday.  WCHS will travel to Cookeville Monday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

The WCHS softball team saw their season come to an end with losses to Stone Memorial (18-7) and Warren County (3-2).

Johnny Lynn Young

Johnny Lynn Young, 48, of Sparta, passed away this evening at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


DON’T FORGET! Sparta Electric power outage at 11 p.m.

According to L. R. West, of Sparta Electric, there will be a power outage for Sparta Electric customers, beginning at 11 p.m., Saturday, May 2. West said the outage will last approximately one hour.


Kathy “Kate” DePew Dornbusch

Kathy “Kate” DePew Dornbusch, 68, of Pikeville, passed away April 30, 2015, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Dornbusch was born March 25, 1947, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Alfred Depew and Lillian Savage DePew.

She was a home health aid.

Mrs. Dornbusch was preceded in death by her father, Alfred DePew; brother, David DePew; sister-in-law, Donna DePew; nephew, Daniel DePew; and niece, Mary Ruud Martini.

Survivors include her husband, David Dornbusch, of Pikeville; daughter, Tara McMahan (Justin McCormick), of Pikeville; three sons, Kelley (Regina) McMahan, of Texas, Charles (Beulah) McMahan, of Florida, Clint (Kathy) McMahan, of Florida; mother, Lillian DePew, of Illinois; grandsons, Jacob, Patrick, Zack, Taylor, Charles, … Read More


Final day of used book sale

First United Methodist Church, on North Church Street, is hosting the White County Public Library used book sale. Doors are open from 8 a.m.-noon. This is the last day of the sale and prices will be as good as they can get.


Circuit Court Clerk’s office shows support for Special Olympics

Elected officials and employees at White County Courthouse are showing their support for the upcoming Special Olympics. Details about the dates, times and locations will be provided later. The blue t-shirts with the Special Olympics logo are sold as a fundraiser to help pay expenses for local participants.


Yard sale to benefit animal shelter

White County Humane Society will have a yard sale Saturday, May 2, beginning at 7 a.m., in the CompuGeeks parking lot, 386 W. Bockman Way, to benefit White County Animal Shelter.


AAA: Drivers pay highest gas prices of the year

Thursday’s national average price for gas was $2.58 per gallon – the highest average so far this year. Average U.S. gas prices are up 55 cents per gallon since reaching a low of $2.03 per gallon in late January, making this the largest seasonal increase in gas prices since 2012. The national average price of gas has increased 16 days in a row for a total of 19 cents per gallon. Thursday’s national average price of gas is the most expensive since Dec. 12, 2014.
