Tennessee H.O.G. Rally is May 26-30, 2015, in Cookeville. Bikers will be cruising the entire Upper Cumberland and spending tourism dollars in our community. But, the most exciting news was the $10,000 Rural Series of Poker, One-Day Poker Run, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, for pre-registered guests of the H.O.G. Rally, in Cookeville. One of the stop-off locations was Sparta, at the fairgrounds, at the White County Agriculture Complex. White County businesses joined in the effort to welcome these bikers to this community. Numerous gifts were donated for our special guests.

White County School Nutrition Program providing summer meals

White County School Nutrition Program is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals will be provided at the site and times as follows:

White County High School

June 1-5 and June 8-12

Breakfast served: 8-8:30 a.m.

Lunch served: 11:15-11:45 a.m.

Ficosa North America to build new facility in Putnam County

Global Automotive Supplier to Create 550 New Jobs

Gov. Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd, along with Ficosa North America officials, announced today the company will expand its Tennessee presence by building a new state-of-the-art facility at the Highlands Business Park, in Cookeville.  The automotive supplier will invest $58 million in the Putnam County facility and create 550 jobs.

Ficosa’s existing Tennessee plant in nearby Crossville produces mirror assemblies for Nissan, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler, General Motors and other auto manufacturers.  The company will transfer the existing jobs to the new Cookeville facility, which will increase production capacity and allow components currently made in … Read More

Warrior Youth Football League sign-ups

Sign-up dates for Warrior Youth Football League will be 5:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, June 1; Tuesday, June 2; and Friday, June 5, at the Little League fields behind Sparta YMCA.  Teams are Pee Wee (ages 5-6), Midget (ages 7-8), Junior Pro (ages 9-10) and Senior Pro (ages 11-12). Fee rates are $50 for 1 player/cheerleader; $75 for 2 players/cheerleaders; $100 for 3 players/cheerleaders ($100 is maximum fee). Player jersey fee $35 due the day equipment is handed out. Every player must provide a birth certificate and current physical prior to the first practice.


Dean Mathews Sapp

Dean Mathews Sapp, 80, of Doyle, passed away May 22, 2015 at her residence.

Mrs. Sapp was born Feb. 12, 1935, in Overton County, to Elmer and Fannye Boles Mathews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Junior Sapp; and daughter, Lillie “Sissy” King.

She was a retired manager of a Citrus House.

Survivors include her children, Freddie (Rose) Mathews, Jewel Sapp (Jerry) Jenkins, Anita Sapp (Michael) Galyon, Leon (Deboroh) Sapp; good friends, Larry Walls; grandchildren, Misty King, Michael King, Billy Douglas, Lenny Sapp; four additional grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will have a private memorial service.

Annie Darlene Swindell Carter, 90, of Walling, passed away May 24, 2015, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mrs. Carter was born April 11, 1925, in Franklin County, to Ike and Sarah Nelson Swindell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Horace Leon Carter; 12 brothers and sisters, Luther, Clifton, Forrest, Roy, Ralston, Edd, Murrell, Floyd, Cleo, Zula, Pearl, Audrey; son-in-law, Wayne Johnson; and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Jean Carter.

Survivors include her children, Carolyn Maynard and husband Ray, David Carter, Linda Johnson and husband Freddie, Peggy Howell and husband Loyd; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Webb, Natalie Johnson, Dana Seabolt, Devin (Jenny) Johnson, Chase (Rachel) … Read More


Dorothy Louise Mills

Dorothy Louise Mills, 81, of Sparta, passed away May 24, 2015, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Ms. Mills was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Van Buren County, to Julius Clint and Bertie Lou Humphrey Mills.

She was a retired beautician and factory worker. She was a member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Mills Chandler.

Survivors include her niece, Virginia Baker and husband Mike, of Doyle; special friend, Doug Benningfield and wife Karen, of Sparta; a host of cousins; and the fine staff at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
