Arrie I. Clouse, 91, of Sparta, passed away this morning at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Kenneth Lee Cabral

Kenneth Lee Cabral, 68, of Smithville, passed away Aug. 26, 2015, at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, in Nashville.

Mr. Cabral was born Dec. 9, 1946, to Joseph Cabral and Rosa Belle Cabral.

He was a self-employed janitorial contractor. A lifelong Jehovah’s Witness, he was baptized, in 1959 and was an Elder in the Smithville Congregation.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn Cabral, of Smithville; four children, Kim Cabral, of Smithville, Kristen (Eric) Kulkarni, of Smithville, Allen (Trisha) Cabral, of Duffield, Virginia, Kathleen Cabral, of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren, Allisha, Kara, Evan Cabral; and two brothers, Ronald (June) Cabral, of Sparta, Steven (Lynda) Cabral, of Smithville.… Read More

Sparta Woman’s Club gets ready for upcoming year with new projects

GFWC Sparta Woman’s Club Board met on July 27 to line up the programs and events for the upcoming year. The first meeting for all women who would like to make a difference here in Sparta, while having fun, will be noon, Aug. 31, at Sparta First United Methodist Church. Everyone bring a snack to share. Some of the upcoming events that are scheduled are a “Treasures and Trinkets Sale” at the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad building, on Saturday, Sept. 26, and a Bunco Party, on Oct. 17. Thursday’s results for local sports

The following are the results from local sports action for White County teams on August 27, 2015.

The WCHS Warriorette soccer team picked up their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over York Institute.

The Warriorette volleyball team took Rhea County to five games before falling 3-2 in a District 6AAA contest.

The WCMS volleyball team stayed undefeated with a win over Prescott.

The Warrior JV golfers were defeated by Cookeville at the Sparta Country Club.

GUILTY

Joshua Iceman has been found guilty of aggravated child abuse and first degree murder in the death of 8-week-old infant Taylor Iceman. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder charge and will be sentenced for the charge of child abuse on Nov. 6.

The jury in the Joshua Iceman trial are deliberating their verdict on the charges of aggravated child abuse and first degree murder. The verdict will be posted here as soon as it has been announced.


Clifford Hudson Templeton

Clifford Hudson Templeton, 86 of Sparta, passed away Aug. 25, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 31, 1929, in Sparta, he was the son of Conrad and Templeton and Louise Hudson Templeton.

Mr. Templeton was a member of the Church of Christ, a U.S. Army Veteran, proudly serving during the Korean War, a member of the White County Planning Commission for 31 years, serving the majority of that time as chairman. He was an original member of the White County Fire Board, he served as Fire Chief of the Central View Fire Department, he served on the White County Farm Bureau Board, and he served as … Read More


2015 dove season and early Canada goose season both open Sept. 1

Dove season opens on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at noon (local time).

Tennessee’s 2015 season is again be divided into three segments: Sept. 1-Sept. 28; Oct. 10-Nov. 1; and Nov. 28-Jan. 5. Hunting times, other than opening day, are one-half hour before sunrise until sunset.

In addition to the start of dove season, the early season for Canada goose also starts on Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 15. There is a daily bag of five for Canada goose.

Death investigated by White County Sheriff Department

The death of a White County woman is under investigation after she was reportedly transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center by her husband in the pre-dawn hours of Aug. 26, 2015.

According to White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, the female, whose name cannot officially be released at this time, was already deceased upon arrival at the Cookeville hospital.

Shoupe said the woman’s body has been sent to Nashville for an autopsy to determine her exact cause of death.
