Scholarship Saturday offers Promise students computer access, pizza on TCAT campus

Tennessee College of Applied Technology – McMinnville will open its computer lab 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, for area high school seniors to sign up for Tennessee Promise and fill out their college applications as part of a statewide Scholarship Saturday.

The event is designed to encourage students to enroll in Tennessee Promise, Governor Bill Haslam’s  program to provide two years of community or technical college tuition. Tennessee Promise is part of the Drive to 55 initiative to increase the number of Tennesseans with some form of post-secondary credential, such as a college degree or technical certificate.

Verlon Kirby, 89, of Sparta, passed away September 16, 2015, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Rep. Black visits Sparta

Alan Tatum and Jennifer Tatum-Cranford hosted U.S. Rep. Diane Black at Payless Family Pharmacy on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015. They were able to speak with Rep. Black about numerous issues affecting local pharmacies.

 


Warriors and Trojans set to battle Friday night in Sparta

While the headline may sound that way, it’s not a tagline for a book or a movie about a battle in ancient Greece.

It’s simply a preview for a high school football game that involves two teams whose schools chose the strongest of soldiers to represent their athletes.

This Friday night, the Soddy Daisy Trojans and the Sparta Warriors will meet for the first time ever on the gridiron and it is a Region 4-5A match-up.

WCHS Basketball BBQ dinner tickets on sale Friday

The Warrior and Warriorette basketball teams of White County High School will jointly host a BBQ dinner on October 23rd from 5-8 p.m. in the WCHS cafeteria.  The teams will be set up this Friday night, September 18th, at the football game against Soddy Daisy selling tickets to the event.

The cost of the ticket is $50, which admits two people to the dinner.  The ticket is also placed in a drawing for various door prizes throughout the night including the final prize which is for $5,000.

•October 7: Fire Safety Day at BonDeCroft Elementary School to teach students the fundamentals of fire safety.
•October 9: BonDeCroft Elementary School Fall Festival, giving firetruck rides and hosting a fire education booth.
•October 24: Informational breakfast with the fire department, 9:30 a.m. at the station. The department will provide coffee and some type of food. Please bring questions and suggestions for making YOUR department better.
•October 31: Halloween on the Mountain, 6 p.m. at the station. Come enjoy an evening full of fun, including a costume contest with awards, bonfire, homemade chili, hot dogs, drinks and treats as well as several raffles. All trick-or-treaters welcome!
