Fall Sacred Choir Concert

White County High School Women’s Choir, Advanced Choir and White County Middle School Choir will present the Fall Sacred Choir Concert at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, at the WCHS Multipurpose Room. Admission is $4 at the door. Everyone is welcome.


First Responders Appreciation Cookout draws large crowd

Central Church of Christ hosted a First Responders Appreciation Cookout at the Sparta Civic Center on Sunday to thank emergency workers for all they do to help the community.


Samuel Edgar “Ed” Wood

Samuel Edgar “Ed” Wood, 82, passed away Sept. 26, 2015, at Upper Cumberland Hospice House, in Cookeville.

Mr. Wood was born June 1, 1933, in Roanoke, Virginia, the son of Samuel Edgar Wood and Josephine Harnsberger Wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his son, Michael A. Wood; daughters, Brenda Wood Arnold and Linda Sharpe; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Flynt, of Urbana, Virginia.

A memorial service will be announced at a future date.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Jeanne Mitchell Franklin

Norma “Jeanne” Mitchell Franklin, 70, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 27, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Franklin was born Feb. 4, 1945, in Sparta, to Clarence Eugene Mitchell and Jonnie Ruth Mitchell.

She graduated from Tennessee Tech, in 1968, with a degree in education. She married William A. Franklin, in 1969. They moved back to Sparta after a few years of marriage, and she started teaching kindergarten at Doyle Elementary and remained there until retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and then Doyle United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Franklin is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William A. Franklin.

Drug take back nets 97 lbs of prescription medication

Police Chief Jeff Guth states that Saturday’s drug take back, hosted by Walgreens, netted 97 lbs of expired or unused prescription medication that was turned in by residents to be safely disposed of. Also present were WCHS Health Science teacher Judy Guth, along with students Justin Rittenberry and Juliana Wardlaw, representing HOSA-Future Health Professionals, to perform blood pressure checks. Trent Grissom, a WCHS student, volunteered his time as part of the Tennessee Scholar program.

Constitution Day Proclamation

Million Dollar Mile yard sale

The streets of Sparta will be bustling with people while yard sales are open from dusk until dawn. The Million Dollar Mile yard sale predicted to be the busiest day of the year for many local restaurants and antique shops.

On October 3, yard sales will run up North Spring Street, Clark Street, and Mayberry Street with main locations running through Sparta on Bockman Way. “This year, we are expecting way over 450 yard sales,” said Nicholas Knowles, coordinator of the yard sale. Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 0.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.99/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $2.29/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Tennessee during the past week, prices yesterday were 112.7 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 19.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. Celebrating 80th birthday

Emma Jean Copeland, of Sparta, celebrated her 80th birthday Sept. 25, with her sister, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Her husband was David Bradley Copeland, who passed away a few years ago.


This Week in White County History

•Assistant Principal Charles Dycus resigned from White County Junior High and moved to teach at a private school near Nashville. Dycus taught at the junior high for year and was assistant principal for two years before leaving.
•White County Hospital got its first electric bed in 1975 due to a donation from Sparta Woman’s Club. The bed itself was $2,000, and the Woman’s Cub used award money they had received from previous years to purchase the bed.
•District Governor Hugh Marlin visited White County Lions Club and discussed the upcoming White Cane Day.  He informed the Lions of his recent visits with other organizations supported by the … Read More


Jeanne Mitchell Franklin

Jeanne Mitchell Franklin, 70, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 27, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was a retired school teacher.

Mrs. Franklin was born Feb. 4, 1945.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Oct. 3, 2015, at Highland Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Oct. 2, at Hunter Funeral Home.

Appreciation Cookout
