Sparta ranks 6th in Tennessee for tax-friendly places for retirees

According to a recent study from SmartAsset, a New York-based financial technology company, Sparta is one of the most tax-friendly places for retirees in Tennessee. The study ranks cities on a Retirement Tax Friendliness Index, which takes into account local property taxes, and whether or not Social Security income is taxed in that area.

A support group meeting for relatives that are caring for relative children will be noon- 1p.., Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at Sparta-White County YMCA, 123 Moore Street. Terrance Alan Bailey Sr.

Terrance Alan Bailey Sr., 50, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 16, 2015.

Mr. Bailey was born Feb. 14, 1965, in West Chester Pennsylvania, the son of Clyde Wayne Bailey and Edith Mae Cox Bailey.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Sept. 2, 2015, at Smith Chapel Cemetery, in White County.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Anna Belle Dalton Whiteaker

Anna Belle Dalton Whiteaker, 87 of the Cherry Creek Community of White County, passed away Aug. 31, 2015, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mrs. Whiteaker was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Hillsville, Virginia, to James Rosco Dalton and Alva Mae Jennings Dalton.

She was a former shirt factory worker and retired from Mallory. She was an avid gardener and volunteered at the hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Isera “Bill” Whiteaker, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda (Mike) Patton, of Nashville, Brenda (John) Simpson, of Sparta; sons, Jim (Coleen) Whiteaker, of Sparta, Gary … CONTINUED
