Van Buren sweeps home openers

The Van Buren County High School teams finally got to play in the friendly confines of their own gym Monday night and treated their fans to a sweep of visiting Monterey.

After playing their first three games on the road, the Eagles and Eaglettes welcomed Monterey to Spencer, but didn’t let their guests leave with wins in either contest.

The Eaglettes scored the first 17 points of the game and never looked back on the way to the 68-39 win.  Lakelyn Bouldin led the way with 22 points.  Also in double figures were Carly Cole (12) and Mallory Christian (11).

Cookeville attorney disbarred

On Nov. 25, 2015, Samuel Joseph Harris, formerly of Cookeville, was disbarred by Tennessee Supreme Court and ordered to pay restitution to three former clients. The disbarment is effective immediately, and Harris must pay the Board of Professional Responsibility’s costs and expenses and the court costs within ninety days. This information was provided today in a press release from the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee.

Carole Haston Anderson

Linda Carole Haston Anderson, 70, of Sparta, passed away on Nov. 29, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 26, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the daughter of E.C. Haston and the late Margie Harris Haston.

Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edwin Michael “Mike” Haston.

Surviving family members include her daughter, Sonya Daniels and husband Sandy, of Sparta; son, David E. Johnson and wife Lisa, of Sparta; grandson, Seth Daniels and wife Lacy, of Knoxville; granddaughter, Shea Daniels, of Sparta; and great-granddaughter, Ava Leigh Daniels.

Tennessee Homeless Awareness and Prevention Month

November was Tennessee Homeless Awareness and Prevention Month, which coincided with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week that is held each year the week before Thanksgiving. This proclamation is being made to help send a message that it is time to end homelessness and implore everyone to get involved.

Not only is there a concentrated effort to end homelessness for everyone, there is a special national push to end veteran homelessness by the end of this year and the chronically homeless by the end of 2016.

Head Start holiday closing

The L.B.J.& C. Development Corporation Head Start Centers will be closed Dec. 21, 2015-Jan. 1, 2016.
Children and staff will return to the Head Start centers on Jan. 4, 2016. L.B.J.& C. Development Corporation Head Start Central Office will be closed Dec. 23, 24, 25, 2015 and Jan. 1, 2016.


Knights of Columbus holds annual campaign for people with intellectual disabilities

The Knights of Columbus Chapter 14902, from St. Andrew Catholic Church, sponsored their annual “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities” Fund Drive on Oct. 16 and 17. This program, which is often referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive,” has been in existence since 1970. Knights, their spouses and representatives from Pacesetters handed out free Tootsie Rolls at Floyd’s Cash Saver, Walgreens, Save-A-Lot and Piggly Wiggly. We would like to thank these businesses for their support, as well as those who contributed to this worthwhile cause. All donations received are used to fund the Knights’ programs geared toward improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Rock House open house

Rock House State Historic Site, in Sparta, will have an open house on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5. The Rock House is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. There is no admission charge.


Red Cross blood drive

American Red Cross encourages individuals and organizations to give something that means something this winter by making a lifesaving blood donation or hosting a blood drive.
A blood drive will be noon-6 p.m., Dec. 10, 2015, at Sparta Civic Center, 540 E. Bockman Way.
Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood.

Searching for Pearl Harbor veterans

SpartaLive and The Expositor are searching for a World War II veteran who was stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and who resides in White County.  The Expositor has published three stories with Pearl Harbor veterans in the past, with one posthumously.  We are now searching for any others who may have been at the U.S. naval base on that fateful day. Warriors roll past Clarkrange

The Warriors again used their three-point shooting to defeat Clarkrange 83-66.  Cade Crosland, who went over the 1000-point mark of his career in the first half, led the way with 26 points.

Warriorettes suffer loss at Clarkrange

The Warriorettes suffered a 39-33 setback at Clarkrange Saturday night.   Hannah Leftwich led WCHS in the loss with 16 points.
