High school basketball season tips off Tuesday

Friday’s WCHS game moved up to Thursday

All the preseason work and scrimmages are over. It’s now time to get down to what all that work has been building up to – the start of the 2015-16 season for high school basketball teams all across the state.

While the actual start of the season is next week, several years ago, the TSSAA enacted a way to raise money for their Hall of Fame. Teams can play two games in the week prior to the official start if all proceeds are donated to the Hall of Fame.

Mary Pauline Floyd Hickey

Mary Pauline Floyd Hickey, 97, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 12, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Hickey was born June 5, 1918, in White County, to Charlie E. Floyd and Mattie Mae Paul Floyd.

She spent many years working at the shirt factory and then worked and retired from Wagner, all while working on the family farm. She was a member of Plainview Church of Christ and was a well-known cook in the community.

WCTE welcomes two new board members in 2015

WCTE Upper Cumberland PBS is governed by a board of directors known as the Upper Cumberland Broadcast Council. New members in 2015 include Joe Albrecht and Kelly Swallows.

Joe Albrecht formerly held a seat on the UCBC from 2006-2012. He returned to the board in February 2015. Joe currently serves on the Executive Board as Treasurer. He also serves as Chair of the UCBC Finance Committee and sits on the Strategic Planning Committee.

Kelly Swallows formerly held a seat on WCTE’s Community Advisory Board and was asked to step up to the Council in February 2015. She also sits on the Development Committee for the UCBC.

Downton Abbey Season 6 preview screenings at three U.C. locations

Season 6 of the wildly popular series Downton Abbey on MASTERPIECE will premiere on PBS stations on Jan. 3, 2016. In anticipation of the new season, WCTE will offer FREE preview screening events at three Upper Cumberland locations. At each of these events, the first hour of Downton Abbey Season 6 on MASTERPIECE will be screened. These events are FREE and open to the public, but tickets are required.

The first screening will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at Crossville’s Palace Theatre. The second screening will be 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13, at McMinnville’s Park Theater. Then at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20, the Cookeville Performing … CONTINUED

Bethel Thanksgiving service

Board Valley soup/chili supper

Board Valley Youth Group will host a soup/chili dinner, 4-8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Sparta Civic Center. The meal is $5 and includes a bowl of chili or soup, dessert and drink. The Bryant Family will be singing at 6 p.m. All proceeds go toward helping others during the holiday season.


Pet food drive

On Nov. 21, 2015, 8 a.m.-noon, White County Farmer’s CO-OP at 271 Mayberry Street, in Sparta, will be hosting a pet food drive to benefit the Friends of White County Animals.

White County Farmer’s CO-OP employee Kaydee Johnston says, “We are proud to support Friends of White County Animals by helping low income and elderly households feed and keep their pets.”

All types of dog and cat food will be accepted. It can be purchased at the CO-OP or brought in from outside sources to be donated. The CO-OP is offering a 10 percent discount for pet food purchased at the CO-OP to be donated to FWCA. The … CONTINUED


Randy Clark Bouldin

Randy Clark Bouldin, 44, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 10, 2015.

Mr. Bouldin was born Feb. 11, 1971, in McMinnville, to Larry and Anita Bouldin.

He was a carpenter, avid outdoorsman and loved singing. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Donald Lynn Millraney

Donald Lynn Millraney, 53, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 11, 2015, at his home in Spencer.

Mr. Millraney was born July 1, 1962, in Spencer. He was the son of Jewell Cummings Hennessee.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Nov. 14, 2015, at Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Nov. 13, at Spencer Funeral Home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
