Van Buren duo carrying on family tradition

Families have traditions that are carried on generation after generation.

Those traditions come in all varieties and flavors. For a pair of Van Buren County basketball players, they are living out that family tradition on the basketball court.

Eaglette seniors, Lakelyn Bouldin and Carly Cole, have a special connection on the basketball court and that connection goes much deeper than being teammates.

The two Eaglettes, who are both preseason first team All District selections, are first cousins and have a family tree that is deeply rooted in Van Buren County basketball.

WCHS swim team has first meet of the season

The 2015-16 White County High School swim team opened their season last Monday at Gallatin.

Two swimmers already earned spots in the region with their times in events during the first meet.

Japheth Griggs and Tyler Vaughn staked their claim on a region spot in the first meet of the season.

The sophomore duo are the lone two returners from last year’s team. Griggs qualified for the state last season.

The next meet for the WCHS swimmers is Thursday, November 19th, when they travel to the Gallatin Civic Center.

High school basketball teams working toward openers

The White County High School and Van Buren County High School basketball teams are working toward their season openers.

Afternoon practices with a few scrimmages mixed in are getting the teams ready for their openers. Both schools open their seasons on the road on November 17th. The Warriors and Warriorettes travel to Smith County while the Van Buren teams will visit Jackson County.

BonDeCroft Head Start – making holidays wreaths for home

On Oct. 30, 2015, BonDeCroft Head Start children, families and staff came dressed in farm clothes to enjoy Fall Family Fun Day. The children and families spent time together creating fall leaf and spider handprints, fall hats and decorating paper mache’ pumpkins and paper lanterns. The Glade Creek Community Band came by to provide music for everyone for a good ole country hoe down.

Frances L. Welch

Frances L. Welch, 90, of the Eastland community of White County, passed away Nov. 6, 2015, at her home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Lawson resigns as THP captain following internal investigation

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott today announced that a captain in the Nashville district has resigned in lieu of termination following an internal investigation into department policy violations.

Brian Lawson, 42, who resides in White County, resigned late Thursday. Lawson began his THP career as a trooper in White County. The department placed Lawson on discretionary leave with pay on Oct. 28, 2015, the same day the department opened an investigation into reported policy violations. All departmental equipment including weapons, badges, and commission card were secured at that time.
