Halloween in White County

There were several events in White County on Halloween. Some of those events were a party at Caribbean Cafe, free Halloween photos at Brandon Malone Photography to raise money and supplies for Friends of White County Animals, and a party at BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department. Though the rain dampened trick or treating, several churches and facilities opened their doors to host Halloween fun for the community. White County FFA members recently attended the 88th National FFA convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Proceeds from the holiday fruit sale help support attendance at skills contests, Camp Clements, and state and national conventions. You can contact any FFA member to order or go online:

Seniors celebrate Halloween at dance with Cane Creek Band

Sparta-White County Senior Center hosts dances on Friday and Saturday nights, featuring Cane Creek Band.  On Oct. 31, dancers decided to get in the spirit of Halloween. Dances are 7-10 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5.

Sparta Head Start releases balloons

•Shirley Marvine Robinson from White County High School won the bicentennial seniors scholarship competition. The competition was part of nationwide scholarship program for current high school seniors. The grand prize winner received a $10,000 scholarship and had his/her “Bicentennial Minute” presented on the CBS television network.

•Dr. Etim Iteun spoke at the Sparta Woman’s Club on the topic of Nigerian life and its international affairs. Iteum is a native of Nigeria and graduated from the University of Kentucky. He was also a professor at Tennessee Tech.

•Cora LeBleu, daughter of local resident Rhoda Worley, was the lead singer in the “Hello, Broadway” musical at Tennessee Tech in … CONTINUED

Patsy Ann Caldwell, 70, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 1, 2015, at Generations Center of Spencer.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Andrea Lee White

Andrea Lee White, 36, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 28, 2015.

She was born July 25, 1979, in White County. She was the daughter of Anthony “Andy” Kirby and Janice Lee Welch Kirby.

She was preceded in death by her father, Anthony “Andy” Kirby; grandfather, Woodrow Wilson Welch; and aunts, Shirley Gale Welch and Evelyn Kay Welch-Beavers.

Survivors include her husband, Billy White; daughter, Abigail Lee White; son, Jakob Taylor Brock; mother, Janice Lee Kirby; grandmother, Elma Lee Welch Kirby; brother, Dylan Lynn Welch; stepdaughter, Nikki Elane White; stepson, Dakota White; aunt, Rhonda Lynn Welch; and uncle, Bob Welch.

Gas prices update

The price of gasoline tumbled lower last week as it continues to adjust to increased supplies and low oil prices, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group. The average price of gasoline was $2.19 on Sunday, a 2 cent decline from last week.

For the entire month of October, gas prices averaged $2.61 nationally, $2.17 in Florida, $2.12 in Georgia, and $1.99 in Tennessee. Overall, October pump prices shifted lower by an average of 11 cents nationwide, 11 cents in Georgia, and 6 cents in both Florida and Tennessee.

15-year-old Sparta resident makes news in TN Youth Elk Hunt

According to, three of the five participants recorded harvests in the Tennessee Elk Hunt held Oct. 19-23, 2015,  at North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area.

In the Tennessee Youth Elk Hunt, held the weekend of October 24th-25th, the participant had a harvest for the fourth time in as many years since the hunt was established. Jacob Parker, a 15-year-old from Sparta, harvested a 5×6 bull elk that field dressed at 547 pounds. It marked the second straight year that the heaviest elk came from the youth hunt participant.

Elementary basketball results from last week

The local elementary school teams played two basketball games last week. The following are the results that were reported from those games.

In Monday’s action, Spencer swept a pair at Doyle.  The Spencer girls defeated the Lady Indians 28-18.  The Spencer boys netted a 40-21 victory.

Findlay swept a pair from Central View.  The Findlay girls netted a 31-4 win.  The Findlay boys held off the Bobcats for the 25-17 win. d

Another sweep was recorded by Woodland Park at BonDeCroft.  The Lady Panthers picked up the 42-9 win and the Panthers followed with a 54-2 win in the nightcap.

Bowling season is underway

The White County High School bowling team opened their season Thursday against Upperman.

Although both the Warriors and Warriorettes were defeated in the opener, Coach Wesley Martin has a positive outlook on the season that lies ahead. He took time to talk about the team.

“Although several of our top male bowlers graduated this past year,” noted Martin. “We still have a veteran presence that we will be relying heavily on this season.”

As far as the girls’ go, Martin has only one returning bowler on the squad. That is Stephanie Vaughn, a senior.

Kenneth Lee “Butch” Prater

Kenneth Lee “Butch” Prater, 68 of Sparta, passed away Oct. 31, 2015, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Born June 6, 1947, in Sparta, he was the son of Kenneth Prater and Dorcia Laurine Clouse Prater.

He was a member of Bethel Church of Christ and a decorated Vietnam veteran.

Mr. Prater was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise Prater; and his sister, Sandy Knowles.

Survivors include three sons, Jackie Prater and wife Lisa, of Sparta, Doug Prater and wife Debra, of Sparta, Danny Prater and wife Sandra, of Sparta; brother, Ted Prater and wife Lois, of Sparta; sister, Gina Underwood and husband Bill, of … CONTINUED
