Edna Ruth Cole Jones

Edna Ruth Cole Jones, 79, of Sparta, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital, in Clarkston, Michigan.

Mrs. Jones was born Feb. 11, 1936, in DeKalb County, Tennessee, to Rinshaw Cole and Virgie Looney Cole Lewis.

Mrs. Jones was a member of West Sparta Church of Christ.

She was retired from Mallory Timers.

Mrs. Jones was an avid gardener, but above all else she adored her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father who raised her, Gaines Lewis; husband, Floyd Jones, Sr.; and grandson, Anthony Hall.

Emergency vehicle simulator teaches driver safety

When responding to a traffic crash or fire, emergency workers drive vehicles much larger than their regular passenger car or truck, and many times at a much higher rate of speed.

While they can train to some extent in driving their department’s emergency vehicles and hold annual driver training, there are incidents that could occur in real life that volunteer emergency workers cannot prepare for in their regular training.

Driving through intersections safely, stopping for pedestrians who step out onto the road, and dodging obstructions are some of these unexpected scenarios that volunteers cannot replicate in their regular driver training that they could practice with a new emergency … Read More

Effective Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, tickets for the March 8, 2016, Taste of Home Cooking School may be purchased at The Expositor. You may use a debit card, a credit card, cash or check. Click here to still purchase tickets online. The event is 7-9 p.m., at White County Agriculture Building, 564 Hale St. in Sparta. General admission is $12 and $35 for V.I.P. tickets. Doors open at 4 p.m. for reserved seating and 5 p.m. for general admission. Tickets will be available at the door, if the event doesn’t sell out.

E-911 moves dispatching operations

After 23 years of dispatching operations in a cramped, inefficient space on Crossville Highway, White County E-911 officially moved into its new facility and “flipped the switch” to begin dispatching at the new location, on Mose Drive, on Jan. 20.

E-911 officials expect the switchover to be seamless but have prepared with a backup plan so no emergency calls will be missed.

White County Emergency Communications District purchased the building, located at 403 Mose Dr., on July 28, 2015. The past several months have been spent remodeling the facility to suit their needs, as well as preparing it for the extensive equipment and special wiring required to receive … Read More

Cassville Volunteer Fire Department Ham Breakfast

Cassville Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a fundraiser ham breakfast 6-10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 23. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Items served are biscuits and gravy, ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, orange juice, coffee and milk. Orders of five or more can be delivered upon request. Taste of Home Cooking School is returning to Sparta. The much-anticipated event, which is sponsored by The Expositor, has been held in October for the past several years, but Michelle Roberts, culinary specialist, will be in Sparta at the White County Agriculture Complex, on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Featured recipes will highlight a spring/summer menu. Tickets go on sale at 8 a.m., Monday, Jan. 25, 2016. General admission is $12 and $35 for V.I.P. tickets.

WCMS dominates East on homecoming

White County Middle School hosted homecoming Tuesday night in Sparta and completely dominated the teams from East Tullahoma in the regular season finales for the 8th grade teams.

Prior to the games, the 8th graders were presented their colors, which was followed by Mr. and Miss Basketball, Kendreah Reeves and Masyn Winningham, being presented.

All the suspense was taken out of the games early. The Warriorettes rolled to the 62-6 win, while the Warriors followed with a 48-10 victory.

The Warriorettes, behind, nine first-quarter points from Kanden Reeves, led 19-3 going into the second frame and then rolled out to a 37-6 halftime advantage.

Lamb named WCHS Scholar Athlete of the Week

This week’s White County High School Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Gary Maxwell Insurance Agency, is Mitchell Lamb.

Lamb is a senior member of the currently undefeated Warrior basketball team. In the most recent win over Cumberland County, Lamb tallied a double-double, tossing in 19 points and adding 12 rebounds. In the win over Cookeville, he had seven blocked shots to show his all-around versatility.

White County Conservative Republicans will hold a monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at White County Courthouse, on the third floor. The topic under discussion will be how Tennessee will address the Supreme Court decision on marriage. Everyone is encouraged to attend and learn more on this important topic.
