Sparta Church of the Nazarene showing movie “War Room”

Sparta Church of the Nazarene has purchased the license to show the movie “War Room” and will be showing it this coming at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2016. There will be free popcorn and drinks available. There will be a Bible study that goes along with the movie on Sunday nights during February and March. Goodwill job fair

WCTE to air Gov. Bill Haslam’s State of the State address on Feb. 1

Gov. Bill Haslam’s State of the State address will air on WCTE Upper Cumberland PBS at 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.  This coverage is produced by WKNO Memphis and will air on all Tennessee public television stations. On Jan. 21, Gov. Haslam announced his legislative agenda for the 2016 session, continuing his focus on education, public safety, and efficient and effective state government. Major focuses will include the Drive to 55 initiative and the Focus On College and University Success act to increase post-secondary student success, the Public Safety Act of 2016, the Fetal Remains Act, and the Efficiency in Handgun Permitting Act.


Mackie addresses Rotary Club

Linda Mackie, coordinator at Motlow College Sparta campus, was the guest speaker at the Jan. 28, 2016, meeting of Sparta Rotary Club. Mackie discussed the programs available at Motlow Sparta, which includes dual enrollment with White County High School.

Fred Marcus “Mark” Scott Jr.

Fred Marcus “Mark” Scott Jr., 52, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 27, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Scott was born April 14, 1963, in Dayton, Ohio, to Fred Marcus Sr. And Pauline Tayes Scott.

Mr. Scott was a factory worker and had been employed by Perdue more than 22 years. He loved music and played in a band many years, mostly as a guitar player. Mr. Scott loved deer hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his son, Tyler Scott, and girlfriend, Claudia Eldridge, both of Cookeville; his former wife, Teresa Scott, of Crossville; sister and brother-in-law, Fonda and Eric Eaton, of Sparta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Donnie And Beckie … CONTINUED


WCMS Warriorettes advance to semifinals

The White County Middle School Warriorette basketball team advanced to the CTC tournament semifinals with a 38-17 victory over Harris Middle School.

Kanden Reeves led the way with 18 points.

Both the Warriorettes and Warriors are in the semifinals Friday.  They play at 5 and 8 p.m., respectively.

(Colossians 2:16) The apostle Paul teaches “new Christians” to not let anyone judge them for keeping the “mikra” or “keeping an assembly for rehearsing something special that Yahweh will do in the future.

It is my desire to be at this assembly or rehearsal at the appointed time whether it is Yahweh’s 7th Day Sabbath or one of His High Holy Days such as Passover, Pentecost, or Tabernacles. Our God Almighty has promised to be there at these special times. I know that “if I am there with the correct motive” that God has something special for me.

Snow leaves few without power, keeps emergency workers busy

The National Weather Service has listed snowfall totals for White County on Jan. 22-23 at 8-10 inches. Unlike last year’s ice storm, however, there weren’t widespread power outages, though emergency services workers and Sparta city employees reported long hours serving residents of the community.

According to Caney Fork District Manager Jason Cloyd, the first outage was reported at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22.

The outage was in Quebeck and affected 15 customers. Within an hour, Cloyd said crews had power restored.

They quickly moved on to the Burgess Falls area, where 40 homes lost power due to a fallen tree on the power lines. In just over an … CONTINUED
