Commodities distribution rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 29

UCHRA’s commodities distribution that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20, and had been rescheduled for 8:30-11:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 25, at White County Agriculture Complex, has again been changed to 8:30-11:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 29, because of inclement weather.


Sparta Church of the Nazarene showing movie “War Room”

Sparta Church of the Nazarene has purchased the license to show the movie “War Room” and will be showing it this coming at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2016. There will be free popcorn and drinks available. There will be a Bible study that goes along with the movie on Sunday nights during February and March. Tyler Fredrick McBride, 7, of Sparta, passed away on Jan. 25, 2016.

Born Dec. 7, 2008, in Cookeville, he was the son of Kelly McBride and Samantha Cummins Farley.

Tyler loved playing soccer. His imagination was always huge as was his heart. He was full of love and had a great attitude toward people.

He was preceded in death by many wonderful family members.

Robert Cecil Wilson

The world has lost a great man.

Robert Cecil Wilson, patriarch of the Wilson family, passed away Jan. 26, 2016, at the age of 86.

As his journey on earth came to an end, Robert was welcomed into heaven by his son, Dr. Ronald Wilson, and his wife, Reba Joyce Guy Wilson, who preceded him in death.

Although small in stature, Robert will be remembered by all for his larger-than-life personality and his devotion to his beloved R & R farm.

A native of Sparta, Tennessee, Mr. Wilson was born on May 31, 1929, to Cecil C. Wilson and Lillie Graham Wilson.

Jeptha Tubb “J.T.” Askew Jr.

Jeptha Tubb “J.T.” Askew Jr., 96, of Sparta, formerly of Silver Point, passed away Jan. 26, 2016, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mr. Askew was born April 26, 1919, in Putnam County, to Jeptha Tubb Askew Sr. and Amanda Etta Terry Askew.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Askew was a member of Silver Point Church of Christ. He was retired from DeVlieg Manufacturing, in Michigan.

Mr. Askew was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby Thelma Allen Askew; three brothers, John Pat Askew, Tom Askew, Sam Askew; and a sister, Lucille Taylor.

Lowery tabbed as new Warrior football coach

Over the last 30 years, the White County High School football team has had 10 different head football coaches and one of the biggest concerns during that time period has been that the program could get no consistency because there was no longevity at the helm.

The longest stay during that time period was five years and the shortest was one season. A lot of fans of the program felt that a local person could remedy that problem.

When the new Warrior football coach was announced to the team on Wednesday, that concern was answered.

Gardenhire named Scholar Athlete of the Week

This week’s White County High School Scholar Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Gary Maxwell Insurance, is Madison Gardenhire.

The senior is a post player for the Warriorette basketball team and also plays on the school’s softball team. WCHS basketball coach, Michael Dodgen, nominated her for the honor.

Dodgen commented, “Madison has had a great season for us so far this year. She has worked really hard to get herself ready to play. She works really hard on and off the floor to be the best player and student she can be.”

WCMS Warriors win CTC opener

The White County Middle School eighth grade Warriors opened the Central Tennessee Conference Tournament with a 37-19 win over East Tullahoma Tuesday in Manchester.

The Warriors took control of the game early and coasted into the semifinals.

WCMS led 20-2 after one quarter of play as Masyn Winningham tossed in nine points in the initial frame. Winningham led all scorers in the game with 14 points.

The Warriors led 24-5 at the half and 34-8 as the teams headed into the fourth quarter.

Other players scoring for WCMS were Austin Burchett (9), Nick Plunkett (7), Trey Crockett (4) and Kegan Dodson (3).

Van Buren teams win two more

The Van Buren County High School teams continue to pile up the District 6A wins.

Both rolled past visiting Marion County on Tuesday to improve to 17-3 overall and a perfect 10-0 in league play.

The Eaglettes netted the 92-57 win as Lakelyn Bouldin tossed in 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  Carly Cole and Tilly Dodson added 17 each.

The Eagles had four players in double figures led by the 31 points of Caden Mills as they rolled to the 94-70 win.

Van Buren returns to action Friday at South Pittsburg for another 6A contest.


Warriors roll to another district win

The White County High School Warriors ran past Warren County 88-58 Tuesday in McMinnville.

Cade Crosland poured in 27 and Pierce Whited added 24 as WCHS improved to 19-0 on the season.
