Crash involving county truck injures one

A traffic collision this morning on Bockman Way at the intersection of Highway 111 has sent one to the hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the crash. Details are not known at this time, however one of the vehicles involved is a White County pickup truck. More information will be released as it becomes available.  Responding to the scene were Sparta Police, Sparta Fire Department and White County Emergency Medical Services.


Mary Lorene Hodge

Mary Lorene Jones Hodge, 87, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 2, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Hodge was born Jan. 13, 1929, in White County, to Wade H. Jones Sr. and Lara Hicks Jones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford D. Hodge; and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Hodge retired from Mallory Timers.

Survivors include her son, Bobby Hodge, of Sparta; daughter, Retha Green, of Sparta; three granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Faye Abbott, of Indiana, Jeanetta Koehler, of Illinois, Debbie Ford, of Sparta; three brothers, Bill Jones, Clay Jones, both of Indiana, and Steve Jones, of Sparta.

“Expositor Inquires” will help answer questions about community

The Expositor will be publishing a monthly article that will give residents an opportunity to have their concerns answered.

The article, The Expositor Inquires, will address questions or concerns residents may have about something going on in White County.

The Expositor will be accepting questions about all topics, including city and county government, status on construction projects, new businesses and updates on news stories.

Any questions you would like to submit should be sent to pamela@spartalive.com. Be sure to put “The Expositor Inquires” in the subject line.

Sparta YMCA basketball fundraiser

The Sparta YMCA will host a 3-on-3 round robin style basketball tournament.  The event is March 12th starting at 8 a.m. in the YMCA gymnasium.  The entry fee is $10 per person in advance or $12 per person on game day.  The tournament is open to men and women.  Age groups are 10-14; high school and adults.  Deadline to sign up is March 5th. Baseball and softball chili supper

White County High School baseball and softball teams their annual chili supper and auction, 4-7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at the WCHS cafeteria. Live auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets can be purchased from any player or at the door.


Van Buren teams finish off perfect district slate

Clay County comes to Spencer Thursday for Top Ten match-up

Both Van Buren County High School basketball teams put the finishing touches on a perfect District 6A slate with a pair of wins over visiting Whitwell Tuesday in Spencer.

Both the Eagles and Eaglettes are now 12-0 in the district and 19-3 overall.

The Van Buren girls won their game 71-31 and the boys’ followed with a 75-36 in the nightcap.

In the girls’ district finale against Whitwell, Cole and Bouldin combined for 44 points. Cole hit four treys on the way to 26 points while Bouldin added 18. Tilly Dodson (11) and Mallory Christian (10) were also … Read More


Saunders named Scholar Athlete of the Week

White County High School student, Jesse Saunders, who wrestles through a co-op program with the Cookeville wrestling team is this week’s Gary Maxwell WCHS Scholar Athlete of the Week.

According to wrestling coach, Scott Cook, “Jesse has been an outstanding asset to our program. He is always at practice, works extremely hard and always has a positive attitude. He is our starting 145 lb. varsity wrestler and has been willing to accept any challenge asked of him.”

Warriors roll to 22-0

The Warriors continued their assault on their competition with a 96-61 win over Nashville Central Christian.

Pierce Whited again led the way pouring in 28 points.  The Warriors hit 16 threes bringing their total for the season to 278.

WCHS travels to Cookeville Friday for a District 6AAA match-up with their archrivals.

Warriorettes add another victory

The Warriorettes improved to 19-3 with a 66-40 win over Nashville Central Christian Tuesday night.

Deandra Luna led the way with 24 points.  Hannah Leftwich had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.  Madison Gardenhire also had 10 rebounds.

WCHS has a key District 6AAA match-up at Cookeville Friday.

Mary Lorene Hodge, 87, of Sparta, passed away today at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Morgan to attend 2016 Washington Journalism and Media Conference

Kailyn Morgan, a student at White County High School has been selected to represent Sparta as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2016 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University, July 10-15.

Morgan joins a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive study of journalism and media. Morgan was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.

National Youth Correspondents participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media. The experiential portion of the program … Read More


Highlands Fitness Challenge 2016 kicks off in March

Highlands Fitness Challenge, a program that aims to help local businesses and organizations cultivate a healthy and fit workforce, is gearing up for yet another great year in 2016. This year’s challenge will begin in March and continue through May 2016.

This competition-based challenge is initiated by the Highlands Health and Wellness Committee. It provides an easy plan that equips businesses, organizations and community groups in Jackson, Overton, Putnam and White counties to become active.
