Pauline Barnes “Tid” Young

Pauline Barnes “Tid” Young, 83, of the Gum Springs community, passed away Feb. 6, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. Young was born Nov. 16, 1932, in White County, to Estel Barnes and Elmina Brady Barnes.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charlie Paul Young; two sons, Paul Young Jr., Roy Lee Young; grandson, Kevin Cunningham; four brothers, Mutt Barnes, James Barnes, Ross Barnes, Virgle Barnes; and two sisters, Irene Barnes and Christine Bain Young.

Help counsel others about Medicare

SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program), a federally grant-funded program that helps the Medicare population and their caregivers locally by offering free, unbiased information and counseling, is seeking professional volunteers to help provide local one-on-one benefits counseling in their own communities. Volunteers are trained on Medicare-focused benefits through a two-day course and are also cross-trained on Medicare fraud, waste and abuse through the SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) Program.

Upcoming training will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Feb.  22 and 25, at the Upper Cumberland Development District. Volunteers are asked to give two to three days a monthly.

AAA: Gas prices drop 6 cents in seven days

Falling crude oil prices have helped keep downward pressure on the price at the pump and drivers continue to pay prices unseen since 2009.

Today’s national average price of $1.74 per gallon represents a savings of 6 cents per gallon since last week, 43 cents lower than a year ago. Consumers continue to save more than $1 per gallon versus the 2015 peak price.

WTI closed out the week down 83 cents to settle at $30.89 per barrel at the close of formal trading on the NYMEX.

Tennessee: The current average price of $1.57 is 4 cents lower than last week and 45 cents lower than this time


“Expositor Inquires” will help answer questions about community

The Expositor will be running a new monthly article that will give residents an opportunity to have their concerns answered.

The article, The Expositor Inquires, asks that the community submit questions or concerns they may have about something going on in White County.

The Expositor will be accepting questions about all topics, including city and county government, status on construction projects, new businesses and updates on news stories.

Any questions you would like to submit should be sent to pamela@spartalive.com. Be sure to put “The Expositor Inquires” in the subject line.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Taste of Home Cooking School tickets are now on sale

Tickets for the Tuesday, March 8, 2016, Taste of Home Cooking School are now on sale. General admission is $12 and $35 for V.I.P. tickets. All tickets will be purchased online this year. No tickets will be sold at The Expositor.

Doors open at 4 p.m. for V.I.P. ticketholders and 5 p.m. for general admission. The show is 7-9 p.m.

 


Mary Christine Smith

Mary Christine Smith, 92, of Sanford, Florida, passed away Jan. 25, 2016, at Island Lake Center, in Longwood, Florida.

She was born April 30, 1923, in Sparta. She was the daughter of the late Archie Smith and the late Hettie Jane Smith.

She had been employed as a production worker.

Mrs. Smith has left behind two children, Thurman Terrence Smith, Priscilla Sue Sessions; three sisters, Jeannie Guidara, Lucille Brock, Anna Sanders; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was 1 p.m., Jan. 29, 2016, at Banfield Funeral Home, Winter Springs, Florida, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, in Sparta. Pastor Larry Leonard officiated.

Darlene Colwell

Darlene Colwell, 57, passed away Feb. 1, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 3, 1958, in Sparta, to Hugh Lester Keathley and Naomi Conley Keathley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Crystal Colwell.

Survivors include her lifetime soul mate, Charles Adkins, of Sparta; brother, Tony Keathley; and special friend, Kathy Margeson, of Sparta.

There will be a private celebration of her life with friends at a later date.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The Warriors ran their record to 23-0 with a 65-56 win over their archrivals, Cookeville.

The Warriorettes couldn’t overcome a poor shooting night and fell to the Lady Cavaliers 46-36.

Pierce Whited led the Warriors with 21.

Hannah Leftwich led the girls with 14.
