Information released on death of man in Butler Street fire

Sparta Fire Investigator Jeff Hutson has released some information on the March 7, 2016, structure fire that claimed life of a Sparta man.

The home, which was on Butler Street, was occupied by Patricia Sherrell on the first story and Stan Schultz, age 62, who had been living on the second story of the residence.

The fire was reportedly contained to one room in the home, where Schultz had been residing.

Sparta Fire Department, Sparta Police Department and White County Emergency Medical Services responded to the fire and reportedly found Schultz deceased.

Hutson, as well as Tennessee Bomb and Arson, responded to the residence to investigate the cause … Read More

City of Sparta votes to change composition of airport board

After being discussed for some time by Upper Cumberland Regional Airport Board of Directors, Sparta Board of Mayor and Alderman voted during the March 17, 2016, meeting to change its inter-local agreement to allow for an increase in the number of members on the UCRA board to include all city mayors and county executives of the entities that own the airport.
The UCRA board is comprised of four appointed members from each entity that owns the airport (City of Sparta, City of Cookeville, White County and  Putnam County), a representative of the pilot committee, and two of the elected city mayors/county executives from the four governing bodies.

WCHS diamond teams compete in weekend tournaments

Both the White County High School baseball and softball teams competed in tournaments over the weekend.

The Warrior baseball team went 3-1 in a tournament played at Pigeon Forge.  The Warriors picked up wins over Heritage (5-2), Anderson County (5-3) and Jefferson County (9-3). Their lone loss was to the host team, Pigeon Forge (6-4).

Mills named to All State Tournament team

Van Buren County’s  Caden Mills was just announced as a member of the Class A All State Tournament team.

In the two games of the tournament, the sophomore averaged 24.5 points and 10 rebounds.

Robert F. Goodwin, 86, of Sparta, passed away March 18, 2016, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Van Buren season ends in Final Four

The Van Buren County Eagles storybook season came to an end Friday in the Class A state semifinals of the BlueCross Championships at MTSU.

The Eagles, who ended the season at 28-6, were defeated 54-40 by Booker T. Washington (32-5) and saw their season end just one game short of the state title game.  Wednesday’s win over Grace Christian Academy was the first-ever school win in a TSSAA state tournament game.

White County Sheriff Department was serious about their warning to keep trash off White County roadways. Sgt. John Meadows was patrolling on Roberts Matthews Highway today and saw trash littering the area. Sgt. Meadows stopped to investigate and located a piece of mail with the name and address of the owner of the trash. Sgt. Meadows contacted the owner and warned them that they could pick up the trash that had fallen from their truck, or be cited. The owners did come back and pick up the trash as requested by Sgt. Meadows.

Exhibit winners at 2016 U.C. Home and Garden Show

At the Upper Cumberland Home and Garden Show, in Cookeville, the Home Builders Association presented awards to exhibits, which were based on originality, best use of space, and effective marketing of company and products. The pottery awards were made especially for the event by Thor McNeil, of the Fragrant Mushroom, in Sparta.

The winner of “Best of Show” was Custom Fireplaces & More.

Best Large Exhibit was Jeff Woods Construction.

Best Small Exhibit was Lagniappe Spice Co.

Dan Hearn won $100 in the drawing from the Home Show scavenger hunt.

2016 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program announced

Tennessee Department of Agriculture will soon accept applications for the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

The application period is April 15-May 6. With that time being relatively brief, participants are encouraged to plan project details before the application period begins.

Mitchell wins Rotary speech contest

Peyton, a senior at White County High School, won the Rotary Club of Sparta’s 4 Way Test Speech Contest, on Thursday, March 17, 2016. Mitchell will be awarded a $100 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Sparta and will advance to the Rotary District competition, in Cookeville, on Saturday, March 26, 2016, where he will compete for an $1,000 scholarship. Mitchell is pictured with the judges for the event. Virginia Webster Norrod

Virginia Webster Norrod, 91, of Sparta, passed away March 16, 2016, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mrs. Norrod was born May 11, 1924, in White County, to Daniel Stewart Webster and Fannie Lou Guy Webster.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Norrod; father of her children, Ardell Lollar; son, Dean Lollar; grandson, Jeffery Lollar; four sisters, Minnie Russell, Dannie Davis, Willie Jenkins, Eunice Hecker; and five brothers, Casto Webster, Milo Webster, Creed Webster, Clint Webster and Herbert Webster.

Kenneth M. Dabbs

Kenneth M. Dabbs , 88, of Sparta, passed away March 16, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Dabbs was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Dabbs and Nina P. Chaffin Dabbs; his wife, Betty Jean Dabbs; and siblings, Nora Oneda Lambreght Sargent, Rozelle Ruth Zabel and Billy Dabbs.

Some of Mr. Dabbs’ accomplishments were he was a member of Central Church of Christ and served as an elder. He was a veteran of World War II, with the rank of seaman 1st class, U.S. Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Shangri-La., CV-38 He was retired from Cummins Corporation (Fleetguard), in Cookeville.
