What: Breakfast (meal will include eggs cooked to order, country and city ham, sausage, bacon, hash browns, biscuits, white gravy, chocolate gravy, red-eye gravy, pancakes on request, milk and orange juice); Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

When: 6-10 a.m.

Where: Fire hall 124 Montgomery Rd.


Michael James Austin

Michael James Austin, 28, of Spencer, passed away March 5, 2016.

Mr. Austin was born March 18, 1987, in Nashville, the son of Jim Austin and Mary McGaughy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., March 10, 2016, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery, in Van Buren County. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., March 9, and 8-11 a.m., March 10, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Eagles join Eaglettes in state tournament

Van Buren County High School’s basketball teams continue to make history.

Monday night in Spencer, the Eagles defeated Jackson County 70-57 in Class A sectional action to earn their second consecutive trip to the state tournament.   The Eaglettes qualified Saturday for the state Saturday giving the school dual trips to the state for the first time ever.

Four Eagles reached double figures and two of them had double-doubles.  Caden Mills led the way with 23 points and 12 rebonds.  Jared Binkley also had a double-double posting 18 points and 14 rebounds.  Drew Roberts added 17 points and Bo Walker netted 10.

Royal Liquors preparing to open

Signs are going up outside the WEBstorefront of the new Royal Liquors store, located in the shopping center with Piggly Wiggly, Serenity Thrift and Dollar Tree. An LCD sign in the window proclaims, “Opening soon!”


Lorene Clendenon

Lorene Clendenon, 93, of Spencer, passed away March 5, 2016, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mrs. Clendenon was born May 22, 1922, in Spencer, the daughter of Charlie Shockley and Cleo Wilson Shockley.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., March 9, 2016, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Molloy Cemetery, in Spencer. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., March 8, and 8-11 a.m., March 9, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Jewell Bumbalough Kelsey

Jewell Bumbalough Kelsey, a long time resident of the Gum Spring Mountain community, graduated home to be with the Lord, on March 5, 2016.

Born Dec. 13, 1925, Mrs. Jewell celebrated her 90th birthday this past December.

Mrs. Jewell worked for Mallory Timers, 1969-2003, where she was fondly known as “Ma.” A dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she loved to cook for her family as was evidenced by her Sunday night dinners.

Due to declining health, Mrs. Jewell most recently resided at Morningside Assisted Residence, in Cookeville. There she made many new friends, both residents and staff. Her quick sense of humor and sweet personality endeared her to … Read More

Benefit planned for long-serving emergency responder

A man who has selflessly served his community for many decades now needs assistance from the community, as he has recently lost his wife, who had been his partner in service, and now faces his own illness.

Dwayne Steele is a familiar face to emergency services personnel. For 30 years he served as a volunteer firefighter with BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department.

He spent 10 years at White County Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician-IV while working toward his paramedic license. He also worked full time for five years at Putnam County EMS, while working full time at White County EMS .

Fire/rescue practice vehicle extrication

Sparta Fire Department hosted a vehicle extrication class on Fri., March 4 and Sat., March 5 at Station One. Sparta firefighters, along with firefighters from BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department and Sparta-White County Rescue Squad participated in the course. Firefighter Edward Hensley and Rescue Chief Mike McLatchy were the course instructors. Sparta Fire Chief Kirk Young stated that there was a good turnout for the class and thanks White County Sheriff Department, Jeff’s Body Shop, Scott’s Auto Salvage, Edd Rogers, and Damien Hall for donating cars for the class. “We cannot do it without their help. We really appreciate it,” Young says.
